Shola Ameobi

Was just thinking, he can't be far off having highest sub apps in top flight history, never mind just Premier League? If we think there were no substitutes allowed, then just 1, then 2 before the 3 we're at now.

Pardew was begging to get the daft knacka on.  He inexplicably loves him.  It's mental.  Don't think he held one ball up we thumped to him.

When he did get his head onto a long ball and effectively passed it to Guzan, Pardew was shouting "Well done Shols! Well done Shols!"

Anyone else think Pardew is being forced to play Shola, to justify not letting him go to ACON? That was one of the most confusing substitutions i've ever seen.

I've mentioned that before. People may laugh at the suggestion, but by all accounts Ameobi is an important part of the dressing room. Pardew probably feels he needs to keep him onside.

The most infuriating about Shola is that he does not seem to apply any thinking the way he plays. Any donkey would know that if you are playing as a target man upfront alone in a 4-3-3, you do not go for headed 'flick ons' because nobody will be there. In a 4-3-3, a target man should be holding on to the ball and spreading it to either one of the wing/forward or the most advanced midfielder before making his way to the penalty box. You can only go for 'knock'ons' in a 4-4-2 when there will be another striker to receive it. How is it possible that we as fans can see this but a professional player who is training every day can't figure this out? Is Pardew not telling him what he is expected to do?!!

Shola's name precedes him.

He had a better pass accuracy than Cabaye, Debuchy, Gutierrez, Taylor and Anita tonight.  The only ones of those getting stick are Gutierrez and Taylor.

He made 5 clearances.

Only Taylor and Debuchy won more aerial duels, despite him only being on 20 minutes.

He was dispossessed once.

Whether he was the man to come on when he did is another question.  Getting dogs abuse out of kilter with his contribution though.

As usual.

In practical terms though, its pretty tricky to trap a ball with no one but Villa defenders around you.

Did you also count how many knock ons he headed to err nobody?

Granted. I would be more forgiving if he tried to trap the ball and failed due to Villa's pressure as opposed to trying those knockons that had 0% chance of success.
