Dave
Yeah, but There's an international tournament on, it's always harder to sign players when there is Nobody spends any money in January We've no cash in the bank We can't attract players The board clearly don't back their manager, he's not their choice We've just come up, so players want to wait and see how we fare back in the Premier League The financial fair play rules will change everything Just staying up is the priority, because all the other teams are loads better than us We just need to buy more Tiotes and Ben Arfas, which is dead easy. alpal78
+1 This summer will tell us a lot about Ashley and his intentions. Yes, but not as much as next January, or the summer after. Ya coz that's what everyone is saying

thomas
Anyone who would genuinely petition for a stay of judgment after this point - after half a season and the noises he's made about priorities - is mad.

Dave
http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Newcastle-manager-Alan-Pardew-has-been-told-to-turn-them-into-contenders-for-Europe-during-crunch-talks-with-owner-Mike-Ashley-article738641.html Newcastle order Pardew to aim for Europe Published 12:24 21/05/11 By Simon Bird Alan Pardew has been ordered to “aim high” and turn Newcastle into top-level contenders during crunch talks with owner Mike Ashley. The billionaire owner sat down with Pardew this week to map out their summer spending targets and discuss contract renegotiations. And after a season where mere survival was the aim, Ashley made it clear that he isn’t content to bump around the lower reaches of the league and wants the excitement of snapping at the heels of the established top six. While it appears full-back Jose Enrique is on his way out because the club are “finding it difficult” to get him to open talks on an extension, Pardew has a new striker and a new wide-man at the top of his shopping list. Pardew says the club has dictated he must unearth young signings who can mature and add to their value at St James’ Park. He revealed a cabinet of himself, Ashley, MD Derek Llambias, club secretary Lee Charnley and chief scout Graham Carr thrashed out their next moves on Thursday and says he left the meeting “buoyed as a Premier League manager” by what he has heard. Pardew said: “Mike came up and we talked about the strategy to progress. We can attract a squad that I know will keep us safe. But that is not what I want, or [what] Mike wants. We want to excel. “We have to take a few chances in the market - people who will keep us in the division and might well take us to the next level. I could spend money to make sure we finish 13th, 14th or 15th, but that is not what Mike wants. “He wants to push us as high as we can go. We are realistic, but we will aim high - within the realism of our situation. “We need two or three players who have real flair and can excite our crowd. "It is difficult to break into the Champions League but we can be a club who plays on the front foot, with an attacking game-plan. That is the aim.” Hmm. Yorkie
We'll finish about 11th, with what is a severely depleted squad. If they're even thinking about consolidating our safety this transfer window, it's a joke. The absolute bare minimum next season should be top half. Guest Flatline
Cant help the feeling that while I appreciated everything hughton did for us, he had carroll as a striker and even Ben arfa serving him 3 points, and even then he produced way more erratic results... depending on how much of the spring season results you credit to pardew I think they have been slightly more stable, especially when you take into consideration that we have no carroll/ben arfa

fredbob
Having been against his appointment and despite the obvious improvements in certain aspects of our play I have to say Im still not sold on him, I just dont think he'll take, I also think that there is something Roeder-esque about his rent-a-quote nature, says all the right things, 'scouting set up', getting "bums off seats" players, "attacking football" etc, all just reminiscent of Roeders tenure. As Ive said Ive seen improvements in the team which perhaps were worth a couple more wins had they been implemented earlier in the season but i havent seen anything which has made me think that he can take our play to the next level, especially in a season where the 'normal level of play' returns. Just an opinion, I think he'll be here for another season then gone the season after that.

My predicition is that we'll be treading water for large parts of the season and with it being an Ashley appoint think this will be enough to keep him in the job for the season but wont be good enough the season after. I just dont see us doing badly enough to warrant an early sacking. "Badly enough" being 14th place or less, hence one full season.
