Wigan Athletic 0 - 1 Newcastle United - 02/01/11 - post match reaction from p39

If we'd lost today we'd have been right in trouble; instead the margins in the league are so small that we jumped right up the league. Finishing 10th would be fantastic but it's a bit of a joke to suggest people are being overly negative at this stage.

We just beat one of, if not the worst team in the league. Great, and a vital three points, but it makes a shitload of sense not to get carried away.

It's been the same way for years - you're not allowed to criticise if we won.

I'm not saying we should be dreaming of CL or whatever, just saying there is room to enjoy a victory at times instead of bashing players, especially after a win straight after two losses.

Very few people are 'bashing players'. As you mentioned, it was a good team performance with a couple of standouts, so I can only assume that anyone having a go at players after today are basing their posts on previous opinions anyway.

Have a look at pages 39-41 of this thread in particular if you're after people enjoying the victory, there are plenty.

The result at Wigan is HALF the New Year job done ; West Ham now looms and at least a point is required from them, preferably 3. Those crowing about '10th place' should get real - Dave is spot on with his comments. A few bad results combined with good ones for opposing sides can put you right back in trouble again - I would have thought that a few years watching football would have taught people that. Before the 3 points for a win came in, it was possible to regard mid-table as pretty safe ; not any more.....NUFC need to keep picking up points and Blackpool's results have illustrated that no team is a cert for relegation because they are not a 'Big Club'.

Deserved win at Wigan - Barton ran the M/F, Harper was a far more reassuring presence in goal than Krul who always looks as if he is on hot bricks. Harps hardly had a save to make, but did make one really good one early in the game. Coloccini was excellent at the back, he is far better against less physical forwards than big bustling ones. Simpson has improved far more than anyone expected and Jonas never stopped taking the game to them, esp late in the game when they were leaving gaps.

Our desperate need for striking power was evident in this game - it should have been out of sight by midway through second half but poor control/lack of pace in the middle of the forward line meant we hardly looked like getting a second until Taylor rattled the bar with a header - the only other near miss came courtesy of Coloccini's great header in the first half...note that both efforts from defenders.....

Shola got the goal from a rebound - there wasn't much else to say about his play that hasn't been said already.Enough said.....Tiote did his usual mammoth stint and if we stay up much of this will have been down to his work breaking up opposition attacks in M/F.

A win against the Hammers and the club has some breathing space until if and when some new faces appear....hopefully.

Warnock was the MOTD2 pundit when we beat the unwashed 3-2 back in 05. I clearly remember him saying that Shola had 'every attribute going' and would be a hell of a player one day.

*On the subject of pundits and Shola, when we played City (a) this season, a certain ESPN 'expert' said Shola had 'lots of pace.' Name him.

Warnock - head of the 'Know-nowt-about-it' dept....he could cause a row in an empty house.Pity he is not in the market for Shola, we might have got some much-needed dosh for him.

mate, this is nufc. last time we were in the premier league we got relegated, and the owner's just sacked a competently performing manager and replaced him with one of his mates. there's precisely ten seconds to enjoy a victory at the end of the match then it's time to get on here and worry together.

The music at Wigan is always good. Probably because of the Wigan casino imo ;)

It's high expectations. Hence why Routledge and Lovenkrands are regarded as shit on here, because the former doesn't create a chance with every cross and the latter doesn't score with every touch.

The latter barely had a touch!

We wouldn't be sat here with 3 points if it wasn't for a very important touch from him.

Quite a mixed performance yesterday but I don't think 1-0 is a true reflection of the game which is why certain inadequacies get highlighted more.

Routledge frustrated me on a couple of occasions in the second half by utterly raping his man, buying himself all the time in the world and then playing an utterly shite cross. Best was actually decent yesterday to be fair to him, he set himself up a great chance but by the time it came to the shot he was clearly out of fettle.

Crowd were great yesterday and it's strange how you can go to a place like Wigan and it's almost like your the home fans. All they had was some twat with a drum and sometimes It was like he was banging it for us.

Before the game i said in pre match thread we had too much for them and the Zog being out helped,i was watching it with a mate in the Crofters in Kenton and a father and son comedy duo had a right go at me for suggesting taking Nolan off and playing Smith as i thought Nolans legs were now full of cement but blind hatred  clouded the issue instead of logical thought, then there side kick Mutley said "why Hasnt Ranger been brought on instead of Best" so i said Ranger historically this season has been played when we are chasing the game and we are winning so thats why but he saw that as an argument ffs some people  :uglystupid2: :banghead:
