Aston Villa 1 - 0 Newcastle United - 10/04/11 - post match reaction from page 27

Overreaction central on here like with lots of bollocks being spouted. The team didn't play particularly well, but weren't awful either, to say there was no fight is rubbish. Villa deserved the win, but away from home without Nolan, Tiote and Shola I was never confident. It goes without saying that Tiote is massive for us in midfield, our ball retention is of another level when he is on the pitch and his absence is the key reason as to why we conceded late goals against Spurs and Sunderland.

Shola, while taking a boat load of stick on here, is a decent footballer and his physical presence causes centre halves problems plus he is able to hold the ball up much more effectively than Ranger. Nolan, as we all know is our main source of goals and his leadership was missed today. Coloccini and Guthrie did ok in the centre, but their passing got worse as the game went on and thus we spent a lot of the time on the back foot. Barton was starved of possession and the lack of attacking threat through the centre meant that he was denied the time and space that he needs to be effective. You can never really have excuses for a defeat but I'm fairly sure that with Nolan and Tiote on the pitch today we'd have at least taken a point.

Villa, as many have said already were also poor today, better teams would have beat us by 3 or 4 today. Young and Agbonlahor in particular look completely different players to what they were a few years ago, and Stuart Downing is unsurprisingly still shit.

Harper 7 - Some good saves

Simpson 5.5 - Shaky at times but fairly good overall.

Williamson 6 - Solid enough

S.Taylor 4.5 - Will need to see it again but think it was him who lost his man for the goal, poor if so.

Enrique 7.5 - Our best player, I honestly cannot believe the poor ratings he's been getting on here, decent going forward in the first half and never gave anyone sniff down his side.

Barton 5 - Never really in the game.

Guthrie 5 - Started well, but was sloppy in possession.

Coloccini 5.5 - Did ok to begin with at CM but as we know he's not a holding midfielder. Looked fine when moved back to CB.

Jonas 5.5 - Linked up well with Jose at times, but no final ball.

Ranger 4.5 - Sorry Nile, but really wasn't impressed. Showed glimpses in the first half but never troubled them in the second. Needs to loaned out for experience. Somewhere like Leeds ideally, big club where he can get games and score.

Lovenkrands 6 - Created some good chances late on when Kuqi came on.

Subs:

R.Taylor 4.5 - Disappointing delivery when he came on.

Kuqi 5.5 - I can't believe I'm saying this, but god forbid if Shola isn't fit for the Man U game, then he needs to start. Hold up play far better than Ranger's which allowed Lovenkrands to forge a chance late on.

This weekend could have been a lot better, but as it is its turned out to be damage limitation, we're still 9th with a positive goal difference and a 7 point gap to the bottom three. Tough game next up but with Nolan and Tiote back and hopefully a full house you never know we might get something.

Avoidance. Probably your best option tbf.

Where were you after the match Wullie? and the day after that?and the next?

You seem to find your way on here after attending matches that don't go well. You should try it after the ones that go well too.

How long will you mourn for Carroll and Hughton? How long? Do you even enjoy victories anymore, knowing they have come about with Pardew in charge and Ashley at the helm? Why go to the games at all superfan? Why?

What point are you trying to make, you halfwit?

That you are extremely boring, annoying and repetitive. And you exist to moan about Carroll, Pardew and Ashley. You can't wait for a bad result to pull your cry baby act, but are nowhere to be seen when theteam does well under Pardew. But hey you attend the games right? Superfan extraordinaire you are. Shame your seemingly hoping the team doesn't do well.

Clear enough for you? Don't start getting abusive because your frustrated and you can't deal with being called out either. It's what halfwits tend to do, so don't go throwing that term about too loosely.

Ryan Taylor's delivery was poor?! He gave us exactly what we needed - an outlet on the right. One cross in particular was superb.

Can't recall any superb crosses from him, Guthrie put in a very good one that Loven headed straight at the 'keeper.

Wasn't that Guthrie? If not I stand corrected.

FWIW I don't personally think today was the end of the world, clearly not.

But we have thrown away the prospect of highly over-achieving with some stupid decisions this year.  As it stands if we stay up comfortably then we've over-achieved but it could have been so much better.  As I say it's next season that I have fears about, which really shouldn't be the case if you believe these people who've said "well it's 35 million pounds, we just had to take it".

Will be a hugely pivotal summer.  If we fuck up again we won't get so lucky next time, ask the likes of Sheff Wed and Notts Forest.

Harper 7 - fine, a few good stops too

Simpson 5.5 - kept backing off again and also was nowhere to be found during many Villa attacks

Williamson 7 - not at fault

S. Taylor 4 - lost Collins for the goal and was his general clumsy, superman self. also lucky not to see a pen awarded against him

Enrique 5 - piss poor, kept losing the ball and generally an off touch

Barton 5 - please just shut the fuck up and play the game, poor set pieces

Guthrie 4 - passing rotten, invisible after the hour mark

Coloccini 5 - out of position and it showed. fine at centre back after switch over

Gutierrez 5.5 - final ball lacking once again

Ranger 4 - absolutely terrible, has no idea how to hold the ball up

Lovenkrands 4 - a few half-chances and one he should have scored. otherwise anonymous in play

SUBS:

R.Taylor 5 - one excellent cross and one wasted late set-piece

Kuqi 6 - not enough time, a marginal improvement on our other forwards however

Agreed, despite the fact we're probably going to be safe the club needs to take a long hard look at its business in January. Allowing an out and out winger to go on loan and selling our best striker with no plan B was a ludicrous decision. You would think those in charge would look back and learn from the lessons of the past when we were midtable constantly with a threadbare squad. We have some good, talented youngsters coming through no doubt about that, but we need significant investment in not only quality players for the starting XI but also some decent backups. Therefore we can then allow the likes of Richardson, Ferguson, Vuckic etc. to go and get some game time instead of sitting on our bench only to be used in an emergency.

The referee was absolutely terrible btw.

It was to the point where I don't think he got a decision right all game

There was a particular challenge when Barton was cleanly taken out and the ref turned his back and carried on - they even showed the replay on the big screen.

Just watched Pardew's post-match interview. He seemed quite happy with that performance. Just a pet peeve, but really don't like seeing him so happy/self-assured after defeats/poor performances. The away fans were served up with dogshite today. Expensive dogshite at that.

Having a sly dig at Young was funny though.

Just a pet peeve. Not looking as smug as fuck and calling the effort "gallant" would probably alleviate it somewhat. Don't mean to stymie your ongoing efforts to jump in to defend Pardew at every available opportunity irrespective of validity/context etc

 Still laughing at "gallant".  Some fucking war hero shit from our lads today like, no doubt about it.

What was said?

Asked about Barton's issue with the freekick being awarded, he started with:

"Ashley Young is the division's most fouled player"... and went on to say he goes down and wins free kicks for light challenges etc.

It's been the case all season long but once our first teamers are missing we produce poor performances and results as our squad players are not good enough for this league. The squad depth is shallower than a paddling pool.
