Im really impressed that :

a) we knew of him and his contract situation

b) we sold newcatle above other clubs in CL

c) we closed the deal

for a french international with great quality.

whomever was involved, top to bottom, deserves some credit

It maybe a stupid question but how would we know about the clause in the contract. Is it a case of we liked him anyway, contacted his agent then his agent lets us know about the clause? Or agent looking for a move and contacts clubs to let them know about the clause? obviously Lille are going want to keep details like that on the quiet!

Surely agents want potential new employers to know about their players' contract situations? Will Cabaye's agent not have been making it common knowledge in the biz?

if it was common knowledge it sounds like he might have had a number of other suitors like

Possibly, maybe he did.

of course, maybe, but if so it seems strange that no-one would have outbid us on wages for a low fee like that

BBC reckons it may not happen now.

The guy who tweeted that made it sound all dead in the water then did the most epic backtrack of all time, 'I don't think final negotiations have started yet.' or something along those lines. Probably because he's with the French squad.

Midfielder Yohan Cabaye has announced he is joining Newcastle United, according to current club Lille.

The France international, 25, is expected to cost about £4.3m from the newly crowned French champions.

"Yohan told us on Sunday - first me, then the whole group - that he has chosen to join Newcastle," said Lille coach Rudi Garcia.

BBC Sport has learnt that Newcastle have yet to enter negotiations with the holding midfielder.

EDIT: too slow
