Demba Ba (now retired)

Because of the knee and insurance issue,  £7.5m will be Ba's maximum market value. He will never go for any more.

His clause is there for a simple reason he wants to maximise his earnings and or career opportunities knowing his career could end at any time. His release clause is too low for us based on how good he is,  but very high for others based on the risk involved.

Unless he gets a stupid offer he will always want an escape route so the clause is near impossible to remove in my opinion.

Some of the numbers are just wacky:

3.75m to the club - for a player who has scored a ridiculous amount of goals in the 18 months he's been here

3.75m of the fee to Ba (plus 4m per year in wages) - possibly the least disturbing numbers! In fact, similar to what Harry Kewell got in his equally ridiculous transfer from Leeds to Liverpool

5m to Ba's agents - just insane! Makes me wonder exactly how they can justify this. What does the Ba-Agency contract look like? How did Ba come to sign those terms (becasue surely they impact on both his reputation and his ability to move clubs...?)

Colo must have taken a big pay cut on his new deal if £80k is now 'significantly above' his wages.

Based on the sensationalism in that article 'significantly above' could mean we're paying Colo £75k

Or in the more likely event, they have no idea how much anyone is earning

Colo taking a significant pay cut after being so good? Sort of what a man Colo, sort of wtf is our club doing exploiting the goodwill of our best player?

so was it.....

a) colos wages were wildly exaggerated in the first place ?

b) he really has taken a whacking pay cut ?

c) his 'pay' is quite small but he makes a lump in image rights paid for by the club to his own private company, registered offshore

d) We don't have a fucking clue about Colo's contract and neither does this journalist

Or maybe there was a trade-off, longer deal for lower wages.

That's probably why they insist on these release clauses.  If he were to go on the open market a club would be looking at paying 15-20m for him and there's no way in hell they'll chuck in £5m of agents fees on top.

If they artificially lower his asking price with a release clause then the buying club will be more willing to part with a higher agents fee.  That's likely also why Ba has it in there that he'll get 50%.

If i'm not mistaken, a player usually gets about 15% of the transfer fee unless they have requested a transfer.  15% of £7.5m isn't that much for Ba himself compared to the 15% of £20m he would stand to receive on the open market so they've covered his cut there.

Ba has arranged his contract to enable a quick switch if a 'big' (or club willing to pay more wages) comes in for him. It seems that it also maximises his earnings potential and that is probably because he is not sure how long the knee will hold out.

It would be the wrong message to send tbh to acquiese to his demands, making him the highest paid player after kicking up a fuss when tbh he's been great at times but he doesn't deserve to be paid more than Colo.

Obviously.

It's not that obvious. A player being rewarded with a much better contract after scoring 26 in 49 starts is perfectly realistic. Other contracts should have no bearing at all.

Theo Walcott is kicking up much more of a fuss than Ba and he's praised for it.

that would come under b then.

Would anyone be surprised, if we're linked with everyone, sign nobody, but Ba gets a new contract and the club tries jazzing it up as our "big signing"?

The media are firmly on his side. Especially about the playing as a striker and not a winger "demand" which is ironic...

I don't know what he's demanding, but if the reported figures are right, it's not realistic at all. Never mind just the actual salary. A whinging(/through advisors) player with injury worries should not be on the same money as our brilliant, in all aspects, captain.

His stock was lower in the summer, IMO, after his barren run.

By doing what he's done this season it shows he's not a one-off and that he pretty much guarantees goals when used in his favoured position. He hasn't played to the all-round level he did in the early part of last season (once he found his feet), but he's still finding the net.

If we're going to lose him it'll be in January, but I do think he'll end up staying.

80k a week for a proven 1 in 2 striker is definitely realistic. How many of those are there and what would they be getting paid? The cost of replacing Ba would far outweigh the cost of keeping him.

I don't think he has missed a game through injury once since he joined while Colo is missing more and more btw. Plus his "attitude" isn't bad at all compared to some players.

I don't think it is. Not at this club atm. Others would demand the same/significantly higher wages. So would new players coming in.

There's definitely players out there who has potential. And they'd probably also demand less, and have a bigger sell-on value. Aubameyang springs to mind.  We also have Cissé on our books who has shown he can do the same job, and there's always the argument that we'd get more goals/points in total if we'd not play to Ba's wish.

Won't get in to the injury thing any more. It's pretty well documented that it's a huge risk with him.
