Re this rivalry and the hype, ManYoo were useless when Liverpool had their great sides. Given their huge crowds, they were perennial sleeping giants/underachievers and only came to the fore under Ferguson and in the money-is-power Premiership era.

 

Liverpool have been barely competitive since, so hyping this rivalry probably helps both sets of fans overestimate their team's significance in one of their lesser eras.

 

Its ridiculous to compare it with el Clasico because both Real and Barca have been

a. competitive at the same time.

b. on different sides in a civil war.
