Premier League - Would a closed league with no relegation be positive..

Recommended Posts

Hate to be so insulting, Gimp. But I read the title and thought it was one of James' threads. Would dread if we ever tried going to a US-style model (Which I assume is what you're aiming for with the conference? End of season 'playoffs' of some kind?)

Absolutely not. The Premier League has already destroyed the dreams of the vast majority of teams and their fans and you think it would be an idea to kill their dreams completely.

Is this the only way you think Newcastke would win anything???

You choice of teams awe inspiring.

Why have places for current 3rd division teams and none for current Premier league teams, if history and size is all that matters, why include Wigan.

If anything like this ever happened I would find another sport to spend all my money on.

Spot on.

The US model is perfectly fine for the US, it just wouldn't work for the amount of teams in the UK. Their system gives a much greater chance for equality, that's the only thing I'd like to see recreated. Although, not in the manner they do it (draft system. Even though a draft would be mint, it'd be impossible to implement).

 Wasn't a dislike for the US model in general, it works due to the amount of teams, and it's all I've known for US Sports. But to try and implement it in the UK now, using Gimp's idea, would condemn the majority of professional British football teams to extinction. My main issue.

I love the open league concept that exists with promotion and relegation - something that is missing from US sports.

And I can't see closed league franchises ever taking off unless the "Haves" decide to run off and create their own super league (the Euro League concept we hear about every now/then).

But what about the "farm team/minor league" concept that baseball has, and is in use in Germany and maybe other Euro leagues.  Would there be benefit from Newcastle having their own minor league team, say in League 1, and using that to develop their younger players. Perhaps legitimising the reserve league into a true league. So instead of loaning players to just any club to develop them, they go to a club that is connected to the parent club.

The US system works for so many reasons such as collective bargaining, anti-trust exemptions, limited number of teams and public expenditure on stadiums. It's ironic that such a liberal, free market-oriented country like the US has sports leagues which rewards the poor teams with a chance to select the best players, whereas continental Europe - home to a stronger socialist sentiment - operates sports in free market 'reward success, punish failure' way.

But the US system works because it's a cultural thing. There isn't a major sports league that doesn't end in a playoff and a final, whereas no football league in Europe has a 'final' for the league trophy at the end of the season.

Chill out man, i quickly though summik together for discussion from what mike said about "trading players", the only way trading players would really work is if you had a closed league.

The death of football. It'd be the most boring competition ever, with the same clubs playing each other year after year and with most of them competing for nothing, as they could never win and yet they shouldn't fight for staying up.

You would still play the other teams in different confrences.

The top 4 of each conference would go into the play offs.
