Skirge
Anyone buying into the idea this lad is backup for Jose who is staying? We know we need two leftbacks but would Ashley really spend money on a backup? Nice idea and would do Ashley no harm to show some football sense for once. http://aggbot.com/link.php?id=14492394&r=tw&c=48 Erik Pieters On His Way And Jose Enrique Staying? 9:16 am, Tuesday, August 9th, 2011 by Ed Harrison · 30 Comments Newcastle have PSV Eindhoven defender Erik Pieters in in their sights if Jose Enrique leaves Newcastle before September 1st rolls around Eric Pieters - 22 year-old is a good player While there seems to be an added optimism that Jose may even elect to stay on Tyneside, Newcastle have learned from their Andy Carroll affair of last January, and want to be sure somebody is lined up in case Jose moves on the last few days of the transfer window. At least we hope that’s true. It turns out that Alan Pardew was not at the PSV game on Sunday to watch the player, after coach Fred Rutten left him out of the PSV starting line-up. Pieters is in the Dutch squad with Tim Krul preparing for the friendly against England at Wembley tomorrow night, and while he has just returned from injury, he is still frustrated that he was not in the starting eleven at AZ Alkmaar, which the home side won 3-1. But chief scout Graham Carr was at the game and Pieters did come on in the second half as a sub, so the trip was not entirely wasted. Graham Carr seems to be an excellent judge of talent and he’s just given an excellent interview on NUFCTV for those who have a subscription, and of course he’s a Geordie. He comes across great, and while he;s calm and laid back he seems to know exactly what he’s talking about, and he could become a quiet hero at Newcastle. Pieters has been interviewed by the Dutch media this week and he has expressed his disappointment at not being in the PSV starting eleven, and maybe a move this week to Newcastle is even on the cards. Pieters has been first choice left-back for Holland ever since the retirement of Giovanni van Bronckhorst. And would you believe it, but the former Utrecht player has one of those release clauses in his contract, and if Newcastle bid the amount stated in the contract, there’s nothing that PSV can do to prevent the move. Of course Newcastle seemed to come a bit of a cropper when they tried to do that with Swansea’s Neil Taylor earlier this summer, and it seems there was not a release clause in the Welshman’s contract after all. While the news is that Pieters would be a replacement for Jose Enrique, we wonder if he being brought to Newcastle this week to fight for one of the full back positions at the club. If that is the case we think that would be a good move, and would tell Jose that Newcastle have a decent squad, and the Spaniard may stay on Tyneside, after all. We hope that’s what happens, and that Pieters comes in this week, and Jose eventually signs his new contract and stays. But we don’t know know if that’s what Newcastle are thinking, it’s just a thought, since the back four does need to be strengthened, and maybe it’s just too much wishful thinking. If Jose does leave at the last moment in the transfer window, Newcastle would already be covered if they have signed Erik Pieters. Pieters seems to be a very decent player, and if Newcastle can get him at a low release price, it could be another stellar deal for the club.
Wilson
Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul has confirmed that the club are looking to sign his Dutch compatriot Erik Pieters. With the future of current left-back Jose Enrique anything but certain, Newcastle have been looking at alternatives. They failed to finalise a deal for Swansea's Neil Taylor and have now turned their attentions to PSV Eindhoven's Pieters. Speaking in Holland as he prepares for Wednesday's friendly with England, Krul confirmed that Newcastle wanted to sign his friend Pieters. "We are interested," the Magpies goalkeeper told De Telegraaf. "The coach himself and the assistants have already seen a few matches of PSV and the question now is whether the clubs can work it out. "Our current left-back Enrique has a contract that expires, however, he won't sign and is interesting many clubs." Krul admits he would love for Pieters to join him on Tyneside, adding: "Erik is my friend since we played together at the World Championships in Peru in 2005. "From then we have always kept in touch, regularly send text messages and if possible we get together." Pieters was due to link up with the Dutch squad but he has been given compassionate leave after the death of his grandmother, while reports suggest he could finalise a move to Newcastle before the weekend. HongKongMag
Seen him play a few times and he's come across as a tidy player. Not quite the bomb down the wing fullback that Enrique is but still a class act nonetheless. He's been in the Dutch squad for a while now so if we were to get him on the cheap he'd be a VERY good catch for us. Alot better than some of the Enrique alternatives (re Bridge) we've been hearing about.

Luc
I've seen plenty of him and he is not that good. The fact that he's in the Dutch team doesn't mean anything, except Holland has no capable LB. Average, maybe decent at best.
