Dave
Turned 22 in January. I'd be pissed off if one of my mates conceded a goal from an error like that in five a side, let alone a Europa League quarter final. Age notwithstanding. Doesn't excuse an error like that, but it does make calls to sell him look rather short-sighted at best IMO. He's a young kid with a lot to learn. I hope he learns it at NUFC. FWIW I never said I wanted to sell him I think that view is a bit knee-jerk to say the least. He needs a spell out of the team imo. Haidara should be given a chance when he's fit. midds
Probably worth taking out of the firing line for the time being. He's a young lad and he's clearly got ability but he's making costly mistakes and getting caught out too ofen. Wouldn't be averse to starting him 40 yards up the park on the wing though which sounds daft.

Aye, went to pieces for a bit after his mistake too, which suggests his confidence is pretty well down.
ChrisJbarnes
It would seem that Santon has similar views on Europe to Nigel Farage.
Sifu
Horrendous mistake from him aye but fuck off with the "sell him" posts - sheer idiocy to even suggest that. Needless to say, the lad definitely needs to develop his defensive side a lot more and his mistake could have very well cost us a semi-final place but shit happens eh? Would still have him as my first choice LB. Needs to learn from tonight and quickly.
Ketsbaia
Put him on the wing or something, tonight's error was awful. They were calling it a blind pass on TV but he had a decent look, before playing the pass anyway. Terrible stuff and it was a real game changer
AyeDubbleYoo
He obviously didn't have a decent look.

ExiledGeordie
The lad does just look shot to pieces. Looks like he has a costly mistake per game at the moment.
Unbelievable
Needs a new season as much as anyone in our squad. For now, I'd give Haidara the shirt, and as far as I am concerned it's his to lose and Santon's to regain.
Mick
He obviously didn't have a decent look. He didn't have time and was being closed down by 2 players, he turned towards Krul and one of the Benfica players had gone past him and would have blocked his view of Lima closing Krul down. Ketsbaia
He obviously didn't have a decent look. On the replays he did. A quick one but just enough to see a red shirt. I was confused as to why he played it anyway.
Scotty66
Turn him into an out an out winger imo.
AyeDubbleYoo
I think he has all the attributes to be an excellent fullback, I don't think we would make as good a winger at all.

He didn't have time and was being closed down by 2 players, he turned towards Krul and one of the Benfica players had gone past him and would have blocked his view of Lima closing Krul down. Just before he was closed down he turned himself into trouble by checking back rather than playing an out ball that was available to him. That's before we even get to your blocked view theory. A back pass from that position with that weight against a side with pacey attackers is always going to get your team into trouble, but as I said, he should never have got in a position to make that decision. Horrendous moment from him from start to finish, not just the backpass itself.

I think people are just clamouring for this more and more as we seem to be lacking wingers and he looks so suspect defensively at the moment.

That's probably part of the issue aye, also a less cultured player would have just humped it up the line.

Well he ball watches badly, that isn't a good attribute for a full back.
Sifu
Fatigue is surely playing a part atm. A long rest is needed this summer.
Wil
Sadly just doesn't seem a born defender. Really hope he can improve, but he's becoming a liability when pressurized and other teams must see that. He'll have real competition from Haidara next season, so guess we'll see what he's made of.
Ryan
He looked so down after he made that mistake. Stupid error to make, not excusing that but Taylor's was just as bad. Needs to be back in the starting lineup vs Fulham though imo. He already seems low on confidence, it would be shot to pieces if he was dropped. Jagten
Mistake aside, he was OK. And this is the same player, remember, who was arguably our best player - admittedly it wasn't very difficult - earlier in the season. I just hope, given that he's previously had confidence issues, the fans, players and management give him the support he needs to get over this, because I don't doubt that he has all the necessary attributes to be a very good fullback.
