Well transactions like this could either be widely marketed/announced or be handled quietly under NDAs and such to protect the identity of the purchaser and their other businesses should the deal not come to fruition. Also "off market" transactions tend be quick, better pricing for the buyer/seller (no hassling with other interested parties or other hold-ups etc).
