Guest BooBoo
Howay man, after all the shitty embarrassing decisions that Ashley has made, people wait until now to bin their season tickets? So the Keegan business was fine, hiring Kinnear was fine, relegation was fine, sacking Hughton was fine, selling Carroll was fine and not spending the money was fine? Not strengthening the side after our best season in years was fine as was daubing the entire stadium with his chavvy brand. Oh and dropping the name St James Park, yeah fine with that. But a new sponsor with a dubious reputation? That's it, season ticket in the bin!
Mick
Same. My only thought is that we can get a lot more than £5m if we tried. We probably can't and that's why we're being talked about as getting into a partnership with about as bad a company as you can find.

Cajun
Ashley really has turned NUFC into a toxic brand. Why? Apart from pissing off the fans we are still always on the tv, in the papers etc and finished the season as the 5th best team in the country. What would put potential sponsors off? It's what Ashley has been extremely poor at since he came, for a business man he has been very poor at securing commercial revenue outside of the fan base. Agree with most of that but in retrospect sacking Hughton and selling Carroll was the right decision and we have spent the money.
Guest BooBoo
Anyone using these firms wants their head examining by the way. It is perfectly legal and they don't hold guns to people's heads. If folk are stupid enough to use companies like this, they don't come whining when you have to pay the interest that you knew fine well would be charged when you signed up. But a new sponsor with a dubious reputation? That's it, season ticket in the bin! It depends how much any individual disagrees with the sponsor's business. The quote "Newcastle United will be sponsored by the money of deprived people up and down the country" sums it up quite frankly, it's true. It wouldn't tip me over the edge but I appreciate why it might really piss someone off. Ashley really has turned NUFC into a toxic brand. Why? Apart from pissing off the fans we are still always on the tv, in the papers etc and finished the season as the 5th best team in the country. What would put potential sponsors off? I think you're missing the point, the point is that we're now associated with shitty brands and our stadium looks a fucking tip. Anyone using these firms wants their head examining by the way. Harsh views from a couple of people who have never been in the situation where they'd need to use such a service. A lot of their customers will feel like they've had no choice but to borrow money in this way to sort out a few bills before they get in trouble. jdckelly
quite frankly I don't really care about the shirt sponser unless its something really ridiculous (stupid names really) Wongas an unpleasant company and you ought to have your head examined for using them but thats not really Ashleys concern. His concern is getting the best deal possible and if Wonga is the best deal then its the best deal. Stadium sponsership I'm still too busy laughing at the possibility of the name of St. Wonga's Park
JH
Virgin deal was £3m per season according to Bird btw.

I've never used them but I can only guess that this type of company is the only one certain people will ever get a loan from and not everybody is fortunate enough to be in a position to get loans from elsewhere. The unemployment rate is 2.59 million give or take a few and I would guess that state benefits are fairly shit when trying to pay bills.
Cajun
Lots of clubs are associated with 'shitty' brands, not sure it affects their potential. Surely Sports Direct must be the biggest sports company in the country at the moment? On the payday loans thing I can't see how they can be criticised, if you are in a position where you HAVE to use them then surely it is better they are there and charging what they do than them not being there at all? Disco
From recent times; Newcastle United’s managing director, Derek Llambias, said: “Newcastle strive to work with blue chip companies across all commercial sectors" Still, at least it means we don't have to sell all our players now. On the payday loans thing I can't see how they can be criticised, if you are in a position where you HAVE to use them then surely it is better they are there and charging what they do than them not being there at all? From one former customer: Having paid my loan in full I later discovered that wonga had removed the payment again this left me stranded 400 miles away from home unable to access my money basically theft . After sending 4 emails to which I didn't get a reply and over an hour on a premium rate number I was told its a computer error. I was promised call backs which I didn't get. It has been sorted today 6 days later but only after I said I was going to call the BBC news. Stay clear of wonga And another: on the 29/08/12 i repaid my loan in full only to find they empitied my bank account by taking further funds they were not entitled to after eventually getting through they state its down to the fiance department and have no idea how this as happened and are saying they ringing all its happened to which is quite a few i have incurred bank charges have unpaid direct debits and wonga are doing very little to sort it out only fobbing people off i will be reporting them to the fsa my advice is to... And another: Paid my loan in full then wonga still took another 500 from my account. they say its not showing on the system so i hsve to wsit up to 7 working days for it to be reversed. have been left stranded with no money and a frozen bank account. on sick leave with a 3 year old and my medication had run out but cant buy my next presvription. thanks wonga I'll not post any more. "Surely if you're starving and someone offers you a meal for your left arm it's best to take that meal." In the short term, possibly, and only especially if the situation was of your own creation. That might be up for debate though. They are predatory and can absolutely ruin people. The practice has been banned in a lot of places. But in the long term, if people have to flock to services like that, if they stay popular, if circumstances of the economy/law drive them into it (e.g. situations not of their own making), then I think it says a lot about the failings of the safety net of a society that businesses like that are allowed to flourish.
