Sunday Mirror: Newcastle are ready to offer Man Utd starlet Ezekiel Fryers a deal after Old Trafford contract talks broke down. Don't think he is a realistic option for us anyway, talk of around £12m fee for him, no way we would pay that.
Skirge
Alan Pardew jets to Holland on scouting mission by Lee Ryder, Evening ChronicleApr 30 2012Add a comment Recommend ALAN PARDEW shrugged off Newcastle United's defensive woes against Wigan - and jetted straight to Holland yesterday on a Euro scouting mission. Pardew is understood to have been checking out two of his long-term targets as his rebuilding work on Tyneside looks set to continue in the months ahead. Reports in the Netherlands today indicated that Pardew attended FC Twente’s 2-1 home defeat against champions-elect Ajax at De Grolsch Veste. Steve McClaren’s side featured Toon target Douglas but the Brazilian-born defender could not stop Ajax taking victory as Jan Vertonghen skippered the Amsterdammers to victory and put them on the brink of the Dutch title. Two weeks ago Pardew watched Vertonghen in Ajax colours in their 3-1 win over De Graafschap with the Belgian strongly linked with a move away from the Eredivisie this summer. However, he was able to kill two birds with one stone yesterday with Douglas also a long-term target. Vertonghen has tried to play down talk of transfers and said recently: “Everyone has already made their peace with the fact I have gone, but I have not gone yet. “I have a year left on my contract and I have not decided anything. I am still at Ajax.” Douglas, though, has told McClaren his future lies elsewhere and the player is keen on a move to the Premier League. Also on show for Twente was Luuk De Jong, the striker who United have already ran the rule over on several occasions. However, with defensive signings seemingly the priority at Newcastle next summer it would seem Pardew is determined to make sure he gets his homework exactly right before taking the plunge on spending a lot of money on a big-name defender. Mole_Toonfan
The more i see Sigurdsson the more impressed i get and he's much more than just a goalscorer like i thought and i think we could get him regardless of EL or CL. As for the Holland scouting mission...... i dont see us signing Vertonghen, but i could easily see us signing Douglas in fact i think we might..... Luuk De Jong is an interesting one and only one i think we pursue if Ba leaves.

Its not at all though, unless you are daft enough to think all those trips to France were the same? What about those other trips to Holland for Tiote? Stop having a go at me Mr Angry man I'm giving you the cliche reasons that are plopped out in the papers and by some supporters, i'm not one of them as i can see what he is trying to do, despite the fecks up he's made in the past, and thankfully the past is where they seem to be staying. Guest VaVaVoom
I dont think we will get either really (Vertonghen or Douglas). I dont think they would want to be 3rd choice behind Taylor and Coloccini. That said, we are more likely to see rotation next season given we have options. I would love to see us sign De Jong, absolute quality prospect but one i think we would only go in for should Ba leave. Sigurdsson would be a great signing but at 10mil its unlikely. Cajun
I think the new cb will be ahead of Taylor. The lad has been fantastic when he has played but he is injured too often for us to lower our transfer targets.

The lad has been fantastic when he has played but he is injured too often for us to lower our transfer targets. Yep i expect that to be the case, if we want to be in europe and compete in other competitions we would need 3 top class CB's ( Colo, Taylor, New CB) 2 decent back ups ( Williamson and Perch) Taylor has played a squad role before anyway, i dont expect it to be an issue...... Cronky
I think he wants four specialist centre backs who can step into the first team if needed. At the moment, we've only got three, and Pardew has had experience this season of two of them being unavailable at one time, and the problems that caused. In fact, didn't we play Simpson and Perch against Norwich? It's a vital position, and while Perch has done okay, he doesn't want to have to rely on him. Skirge
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/may/01/football-transfer-rumours-douglas-newcastle?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=twitter Football transfer rumours: Douglas to Newcastle? Today's fluff has got him! We've got the Duke! Barney Ronay guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 1 May 2012 08.43 BST This is the only picture we've got of FC Twente's Douglas. Insert you're own hears-about-Newcastle-interest comedy caption here. Photograph: Andrew Couldridge/Action Images According to the Daily Mail Arsenal have now "stepped up their pursuit" of Ajax central defensive obstacle Jan Vertonghen having – against all expectations – finally fallen out of love with scuttling French catastrophe-magnet Sébastien Squillaci and the physically prodigious but still, after all these years, bafflingly ineffectual Johann Djourou. Vertonghen, who sounds encouragingly similar to "Vermaelen", is 25 years old and would cost £7m. Alan Pardew has been penning a series of florid scented epistles to FC Twente defender Douglas. Yes: just "Douglas". Douglas is also wanted by Aston Villa. Douglas will cost £8m. Douglas was born in Brazil, is 24 years old and his real name is Douglas Franco Teixeira, which is much better than "Douglas". Pardew is also in a funk over Douglas's team-mate Luuk de Jong. Loveably whimsical peacenik El-Hadji Diouf is "willing to forget his spat" with Leeds striker Luciano Becchio in return for a lucrative signing on fee and substantial weekly wages. Diouf and Becchio were involved in a standard issue foul-mouthed, chest-poking pitch bust-up cum tunnel fracas farrago earlier this season. "I'm sure he and I could link up well at Leeds. It would be ideal for me,'" Diouf said, browsing What Ludicrous New Yellow Sports Car magazine. In the Daily Mirror fashionable Rennes midfielder Yann M'Vila, who appears to be constantly on the verge of joining Arsenal, could now be on the verge of joining Arsenal, thereby bringing to an end a period of being on the verge of joining Arsenal that pre-dates the existence of football, money and even the word "Arsenal". Balaclava-clad Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cotteril is planning to "raid his former club Portsmouth" and make off with 300 Wagon Wheels, a jumbo cardboard box full of blue sweatbands and David Norris and Luke Varney, who are 29 and 31 respectively and available on "cut-price fees" from the relegated south coast shambles. And loveable feisty Blackpool talk-a-lot TV's Ian Holloway is being lined up as the next Wolves manager. Jez Moxey, who did such a fine job handling the managerial situation this season, is keen to lure the madcap baldie motormouth away from the north-west and into some kind of frantic fast-talking promotion shemozzle. In today's Sun nice, sad, softly spoken Chris Hughton is West Brom's "No1 target" to replace England darling and all-round person's choice Roy Hodgson. No doubt encouraged by the success of Alex McLeish at Aston Villa, Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace has decided poaching a manager from another Midlands club is the way to go: West Brom will wait until after Hughton has appeared looking sad and lonely in a suit with a tearful little flower in the lapel during the play-offs before making their approach. Also in the Sun "Jack Rodwell's Olympic dream hangs in the balance". Everton midfield dainty Rodwell has been suffering from recurrent hamstring-twang. David Moyes has now threatened to withdraw him from the Great Britain flat-water kayaking squad. And itinerant strike-mercenary Asamoah Gyan may be lining up a "permanent" move to scarcely visible made-up desert moneybags Al Ain of the UAE Hyper-Whatever. "He has indicated on a number of occasions that he would like to remain at the club," Al Ain chief executive Carlo Nohra said, watching Gyan take his daily oil bath in the solid gold eternity hot tub installed on the balcony of his 49th floor desert paradise apartment. Sunderland could receive a further £3m if he never comes back. On goal.com ineffective Mexican jink-sensation Giovani dos Santos could finally be leaving Spurs after four years and two Premier League starts. "Gio is a good player and is a good lad. He has good ability," Harry Redknapp said, putting on a tiny little fixed smile and doing his level best to move the merch. And Belgian defensive lunk Daniel van Buyten has signed a new contract at Bayern Munich despite being injured, 34 years old, not that good and a defensive lunk. ""We are delighted Daniel will continue playing for Bayern next season, we know exactly what we have with him," sporting director Christian Nerlinger said, shrugging listlessly. Van Buyten may yet be fit enough to engage in a tiresome elephantine wrestling match with Didier Drogba in the Champions League.
