I believe there is some justification to be questioning his ability, but using a missed penalty as a reason is idiotic.

Point is, season before it would've flown top corner. Last season, most of this situations went against him. It was symptomatic of what would go on to be his season. He played in the exact same fashion as the previous season, early shots, going for the spectacular, off the last shoulder of the defender but this year it didn't work.

Even IF we did sell him for above 20 and we DID buy 2 strikers of genuine quality then we would still lack depth.

Which is my problem with all of this, why can't we buy two strikers and not sell him? why do we have to sell to finance new signings all the bloody time.

Rare for a team not in Europe to have more than 2 top quality strikers. even under SBR we had 2 great strikers, and 2 decent strikers at best.

Cisse, another good striker, Gouff and Shola is as good a quartet we would hjave had in many a year.

(2 new strikers OR Cisse + one striker) + Gouffran + Campbell/Shola for one spot in the team, if we continue playing one lone forward, which you seem to advocate, wouldn't be enough why? I think it would be, and I would rather spend any extra money on bringing in a creative wide player capable of putting in a cross from the left and a capable central defender (Colo replacement + maybe an understudy) rather than on another striker on top of those.

I still think we need two strikers as is, one a target man type to compete with Cisse through the middle and one a pacey wide forward type who is capable of playing through the middle but primarily will be used on the left or right.

If we sold Cisse we would need 3 in my eyes.

You also probably thought Cisse would start banging them in playing in a central position.

Ba on the left of a front 3 with Cisse in the middle. Yes, i thought that would work. What with their being a precedent an 'all.

Football isn't that simple. Cisse scored at least half his goals in a 4-4-2 as well. Everything he did was amazing when he first came, it was obvious 6 games into the season it wouldn't be the same and it would be a tougher season for him.

Just look at Jelavic at Everton. Moyes did't persist with the same thing that worked towards the end of the previous season and it ended with Jelavic coming off the bench for most of the second half of the season.

If you actually saw Cisse play, I don't see how you could think everything would be solved and he'd go back to scoring a wonder goal every game if you moved Ba wide and kept him up top.

Yeah, if i'd actually seen him play......

Selling goal scorers is easy, buying them not so much, unless you have a spare million or 20. We might find this out the hard way if some on here have their way.

Probably, I still think he will.

he may, next season. But you and a lot of this board were very wrong earlier in the season. You let personal bias cloud your judgement, the horrible penalty he took should've made it obvious Cisse's problems were bigger than occasionally playing wide.

I don't have any personal bias, not even sure what you mean by that.

I just think that Cisse is much better suited to central than wide, and Ba is much more suitable to wide than Cisse.

I wouldn't say that type of player (which we definitely need) would have to be able to play through the middle per se, what with already having 3 first team forwards for the lone striker position (Cisse, A.N. Other, Gouffran), a youngun needing game time (Campbell) and an old carthorse for emergencies (Shola). Focus would have to be his ability to play on the (left) wing effectively imho, keeping width, putting in crosses, etc.

Don't think we need 3 strikers (if cisse leaves) had we been in Europe then aye, but as it stands we need to bring in one, 2 if he does go. Goof is good enough for 3rd and I'd hope Campbell is about to break through and take 4th. The main issue is that Cisse isn't good enough to be our main striker, that was Ba.

Campbell shouldn't be anywhere near our team next season - he should get a good pre-season under his belt and then go and earn his stripes. As for including Shola in any striker make up - absolutely not, he shouldn't be anywhere near the pitch.

Do agree but it would be a nice bonus.

Auba and Bony should be around the £10m each, so we'd have to add a few pounds, but still within being reasonable.  :)

Now, I haven't seen them play a lot but their track record is just as good as Cisse's when he joined us.

This season, Cisse was not nearly a £15m player. I can't believe how many games I watched him being absolutely useless. Offsides, poor decisions and lack of confidence. I just can't see him going back to his previous form, and we really should be able to get a better player for that kind of money.

This is a completely baffling point of view TBH. If we're going to assume that nobody who had a bad season this year can improve then we may as well sell everyone.

I can see a lot of players doing a lot better next season. Cabaye, Tiote, Ben Arfa, S Taylor and Marveaux just to name a few. I don't think Cisse, Jonas or Shola will improve though.

I just don't see any reason to put Cisse in that category at all. He's clearly an absolute top goalscorer and has shown it throughout his career.

We're lucky to have him TBH, I just want to get the team functioning better and watch him score the goals.

I hope you are right. Eight goals and only three (!) assists last Premiership season in 36 games says something else. Obviously I hope that I am wrong in terms of next season.  :)

Yeah he scored 8 league goals in 36 games last season.  While he scored 50 goals in the 79 league games he played (Bundesliga and Premier League) before last season.  Which one would you say is the odd one out and which one is more suggestive of its true ability?

 Expecting Campbell to act as a competent backup or alternative, at this stage of his development, is in the realms of fantasy. He's a good lad, great work ethic and looks to have some ability. However, he needs to showcase that at a competitive level before he can be relied upon as one of our main striker options.

He'll be 19 in January so it shouldn't be too unrealistic and Pardy has basically said he'll be staying here next year.

I agree he needs games though. Not far off 19 with next to no experience isn't good.

Not good enough to be the main striker with shite service, I quite agree.

Same service as ba in more games.

Ba's all about turning scrap into goals and he's far better at it than Cisse. Cisse will get more goals with good service.

It's unrealistic due to his current experience of competitive football. It's unfair because he still wouldn't be developing or obtaining this experience whilst sat on the bench. It's best for all involved if he finds a League One/Two club for next season.

He should really have been out on loan this season rather than next, making him "ready" for the upcoming season. I'd go as far as to say he's wasted a year of his career waiting for a chance he was never going to get.

That's probably Pardew's fault for not planning ahead imo.

This.

Having said that can understand the thinking behind selling him if we can get £20m for him, but I already feel one more striker may not be enough, let alone replacing Cisse and I don't have faith the club will get the necessary business done (at least not until January in a panic).

Secondly he's a hard worker who has shown he can score goals for fun when in form, and one who seems to really enjoy playing football, despite his failure to deliver for large time periods(when given good balls from Marveaux this season he showed what he can do), I loved his celebration for that Fulham goal, love how he tries the ridiculous and can pull it off and also remember how many times he's been given wrongly offside. There has been an element of bad luck to him this last season, away at Benfica came really close to a hatrick, if he'd just hit the ball slightly different angle...
