Alan Pardew

That's why I said Pardew has a point in playing that rigid direct style last season because our defenders are f***ing hopeless.

don't believe this for a second myself, if we signed debuchy and douglas on 1st january i don't think it'd change his approach one iota

I don't see why not, mate. There's being cautious and there's pissing points away.

i just think his primary gameplan and goal is always to keep the defence tight, so signing better defenders would lead him to revert to the plan of last season which was based on starting out to keep it tight for a 1-0 win and if we somehow managed to score more then great

just my opinion, you never know, i've been frankly devastated by the way he's set the team out to play this season after the way we ended the last...it's like he went out of his way to undo all the good work that was done

i'm not too sure debuchy is that much of a better defender than simpson, he is much better in possession though.

edit, also the plan of 99% of teams is always to keep it tight when not in possession.

debuchy would be very, very interesting in terms of seeing what pardew would do with him...we'd essentially have 2 santon's out there able to get up, support play and comfortable on the ball

i'm intruged to see how he'd manage that in all honestly...and it's a genuine question raised elsewhere i think, should we be even considering debuchy (if we are) without a new CB?  could be a recipe for utter disaster

IMHO we could carry Simpson if we bought a solid cb. I know the ground work is done for Debuchy, but I'd rather the club go all out for a cb if it meant choosing one or the other, and knowing us that'll be the score if we're lucky.

End of the day Santon is lucky he has Colo next to him, watching, guiding and there to cover mistakes, Simpson has Williamson, must be difficult for him to cope with. Also it stretches Colo looking after s*** to the right of him as well as his own job and protecting his young lb.

Definitely agree with that. I think a solid CH is more important than a RB. The thought however of a quality RB who can attack, take on a man and cross is the stuff dreams are made of

Tend to disagree with that.

Although we need both a RB and CH, Williamson is essentially a squad player who for whatever reason (injuries, suspensions) has played far more games than he would have expected to, whereas even with Raylor fit Simpson would be considered first choice RB. I also (although don't want to start debating it) think he is a weaker link than Williamson.

So we need both, but if there's a discussion on priority it's RB for me.

Rb is a much less dangerous position than cb IMO. You make a mistake RB you've still got cover, you make a mistake at cb and its a goal at this level. The fact you need two cb to one RB also makes it vital to have good quality and cover. We don't. Williamson needs to be 4th choice more then we need Simpson to be 2nd choice, we can put put a lot more capable players at RB than we can at cb and that sways it for me. Next in line if willo got injured right now is a midfielder or a youth player with zero minutes, in such a critical position it's frightening.

RB is also a lot less specialised than cb, and why you get CBs and wingers playing there quite often with good effect. Maybe the answer lies there, in a player capable of playing both positions comfortably.

It would be nice to not have to see Williamson as much, but RB is a key strategic weakness for us.

We mostly play without any traditional wide players, so we need our fullbacks to overlap often and provide width.

Just look at how often Simpson is involved in our attacks despite the fact that it doesn't suit his skillset. Now imagine we had someone who could actually run with the ball and cross in his place.

The club is aware of this, which is why Debuchy was priority one in the summer and why I hope he or another attacking RB will continue to be the first thing we look at moving forward.

you'd have to wonder how much more exposed williamson is going to be though if we signed a player who can support the attacks on the right in the same way santon does on the left....

Simpson does support the attack quite often though, he just happens to be unbelievably shit at it.

You could be right though, it makes it difficult for the opposition to break when Danny has shanked his cross out for a goal kick.

We need a left footed left back as well, we have zero balance to our attacks must be so east to defend against our left side when 3/4's of the time they will cut inside.

and yet santon seems to get past his man with ease. also on the occasions he does go outside its easier to find someone , even with your 'wrong' foot, if we have players making movement instead of waiting for an eye of the needle pass. against QPR he put a couple of decent balls in but we never had a forward doing the basics and thinking "gamble on the near post" but loitering marked between the 6yd box and pen spot. (same goes with obertan, he'll be a better player with better forward movement, the main rteason why if we want to play with one through the middle i'd pick cisse every time)

My fondness has grown for him over Cuntgate. Proud that he has stood up against him.

Yeah I think the improvement (albeit not enough yet) in style of play the last few games and the carry on with Fergie has reignited my support of Pardew a little bit.

The problem with Santon when he cuts inside without shooting, he always end up with a short lateral pass to a partner in the middle, a pass he is able to make from his position outwide. Sometimes he's running like a crazy horse from the left to the right to give a 2 yard lateral pass, without any benefit.

Finish him, Alan.

I would love for him to come out with something smart (he is good at it), but it won't help anyone. It's a pity Ferguson's gonna have the last word on this whole thing.

It's not a pity. Pardew has riled him. All he needs to do now is sit back with a smug grin on his face.

Pardew hasn't got a leg to stand on about the arguing with officials thing because of the push. A half intelligent person would have avoided getting into all this based on that very easy "comeback" but Alan "no comment" Pardew just needs to be in the headlines.

Yawn.

It's true that he doesn't have a leg to stand on; but in spite of that i'd have been disappointed had he not picked up on Ferguson's behaviour. Especially as a type of manager who stands up for his players week after week.

The difference here is that when he was quite clearly in the wrong, he admitted that. He apologised, he accepted his punishment and that was that. He didn't drag the whole thing out into a big saga then make petty little comments like auld baconface.
