Kanj
We do this because it used to work when we aimed at Carroll and had Nolan in the box, don't we? Yes, thats exactly it.

Guest BooBoo
Seriously though over the last few years our goal input from defenders has been awful. I remember Simpson scored in the League Cup but can't recall a PL goal from him. Santon has never scored, and neither has Williamson which for a tall centre back is pretty awful considering the games he's had. Nothing from Perch, only a few from Colo in his entire NUFC career and even Taylor didn't really chip in last season prior to his injury. Nobody expects defenders to score regularly but someone playing all season should be looking at least two or three goals. It just adds far too much pressure on Ba, HBA and Cisse as nobody else ever looks like seriously troubling the keepers on a regular basis. Cabaye and Jonas really need to get their act together too. Mr. Slugworth
Didn't Pardew talk about bringing in a dead ball specialist at a talk in at the back end of last season? And how he wanted a defender to contribute 10+ goals a season. What happened? When was the last time we scored a headed goal from a corner/set piece? Nearly twelve months ago.

Totally agree like but you need midfielders/defenders getting in the box for an increase in goal return and I don't think Pardew particularly likes that in case of a counter attack. Guest BooBoo
Yeah that's fair, you don't often see enough of our midfielders chancing their arm in the box.

Think he ridiculously overcompensates after what happened in games such as Arsenal (a) last season and Spurs (h) the season before that. Way too cautious. Wullie
Most full backs notch a couple of times a season arriving late at the back post. I'd be surprised if Simpson and Santon manage a couple of shots a season.
JH
PL under Pardew: Goals from 'forwards': 63 Goals from midfield: 19 Goals from defence: 6 OG: 6 Only 6 goals from defence - two of them R.Taylor freekick/wondergoal, three from S.Taylor at the end of the season before last and Colo's against Spurs. Not a lot really.
ChrisMcQuillan
As happened in the last game, our set pieces are so weak they're more of a risk than a help. It's more likely that the opposition will break and score than it is that we will. I'd rather we took short corners occasionally, or tried Cabaye doing that Gerrard style run across the box. Just mix it up.

ATB
It´s very poor from the coaching staff to do the same thing over and over again when it´s clear it´s not working. To be honest it´s embarasing. Especially when Pardew even said at the end of last season that it was something we needed to be working at

SEMTEX
We're against bairns-at-the-back, it's the perfect game in which to utilise this tactic. I guess that means if we don't achieve something in this game, we're never going to in the Prem...
