BrettNUFC Posted November 3, 2013 Share Posted November 3, 2013 As most have said, yesterday's performance is an illustration of what many of us know - there are some quality players in our squad and, with a better manager, we would have a good chance of being top 6 challengers. The problems are that 1) There is no way Ashley would recruit a top manager and no way one would join us under Ashley's terms of employment although Di Matteo is reputedly interested. 2) We lack depth of quality - and numbers - in the squad which would allow a realistic challenge for honours because even a top manager would struggle when we got crucial injuries and Ashley wouldn't spend the necessary money required in order to strengthen the squad sufficiently. Having said all that, I still think that a decent manager could get us into top 8 and, given a run of luck with injuries, challenging for 5th place - we are ridiculously inconsistent and shouldn't be with the quality of players available when most are fit. All of the top 6 have at least one forward who cost £20m+ while we have spent about that amount on strikers in the entire time Ashley has been here. We do not currently have a competant centre forward at the club and Ameobi started again yesterday. Aside from Remy and Ben Arfa our attacking players look rank average to poor, and at the back the likes of Williamson and Dummett get a game. I cannot believe anyone thinks we would be a top 6 side if it wasn't for the manager. A good manager won't make us get into top 6, like you say their squads are still far better than ours. A good manager would ensure a far easier passage to finish 7th/8th however but i even believe Pardew can still get us to 8th just with more of a rollercoaster of a ride. Our standard of players is far greater than those around mid table spots and the players will gather enough momentum during the season to get us to top 8 imo. It doesn't wind you up he said "this is for mike?" HV is in a sticky situation here. He wants to blame Ashley for the club going down the shitter but now his hero Pards is defending big Mike. Professional manager in having more tactical nous than average fan shocker. Will take a few more performances like that to make up for the derby, but that was a lot better. If Pardew's as bad as many on here make him out to be (and he may well be), then in order to achieve yesterday's result against arguably the shrewdest manager in world football, a team full of world class players and just a couple of days after playing 120 minutes, then one of Carver, Woodman or Stone must be a fucking genius. I do wonder who he means by we, are many of the players behind him and Ashley? I can't see there being many. themanupstairs Posted November 3, 2013 Share Posted November 3, 2013 Still hate this guy and want us shot of him at the earliest possible opportunity, but one thing I liked yesterday was post-match. Ashley comments aside he actually spoke some sense, and his English was a lot more professional than it usually is. Didn't sound like he will get carried away with the win, and that's the most important thing to take from the match. Liked his comment about the squad and city having a spring in their step come Monday morning. We CAN play a full 90 minutes with the right tactics and some canny bit of quality to win matches under this guy, he just needs to start proving that wins like yesterday's are no fluke. Yep, from our performances since Liverpool, a good win has been in the offing, thankfully yesterday it all came together, we created chances and took a couple of them. Credit to the players for taking the criticism in recent weeks and still showing that sort of fighting spirit, they give us a glimmer of hope now for Spurs, even if it's just a glimmer, it's hope at least which wouldn't have been there had we go beat yesterday. Even when we were direct midweek, we still mixed up with some nice football. Much more pleasing to watch. Even seeing Krul often look for the short pass now is positive.
