A £14m package on a 32 year old is beyond fucking stupid.

it's all very well that Sunderland fan quoted above tweeting "turned down club a, club b and club c for us", the reason is almost certainly that none of the others thought it'd be worth £14m to have a 32 year old play for you for three years.

It reminds me of when Paul Merson was asked why he went to Boro, and he replied "the same reason anyone went to Boro back then - the money".

He'll score 6 or 7 and keep them up; but a year or so down the line, the mackems will realise what a ridiculously shit and overpriced deal this is.

You'd think the Brown deal might have taught them summat, but obviously not!

You have to wonder about his motivation, too.

Is he going to Sunderland because they're the best option in footballing terms, or because they're the only people steeeeeyyyuuupid enough to agree to pay him £70,000 a week until he is 35?

Maybe they wouldn't have been had Redknapp not got a performing striker already, but hey ho.

Truly mindbendingly awful signing at that money.

Apart from many of these "reasons" being duplicates, do they think they have signed Beckham or something? Defoe is hardly a "superstar"

1) He can solve our goalscoring problems and keep us up.

2) He is worth the wages if he does this.

3) He will excite fans who had become a bit disillusioned by our unexciting football.

4) He will lift the mood of the camp and will hopefully give fans a good reason to continue to go and watch home games.

5) He will be a great mentor for Wickham. Bags of experience and that will rub off on the young lad.

6) He will inspire others around him to create more chances when they see his pace/movement.

7) He can influence the team by showing them how it's done and bring some confidence back.

8) He is a superstar and popular around the world, he could make a move to Sunderland more attractive for London-obsessed players. Many players would be attracted by the prospect of playing with him.

9) He will bring lots of outside attention to the club and the media will be more interested. That might lead to England scouts/Hodgson being more interested too. Which would benefit our other English players.

10) He can help to inspire the young lads in the team and academy players who would see him as an icon/role model.

I can think of a few more but that's enough for now.

It's not just about whether he can be amazing for 3 years. There's lots more positives than just the goals he might bring too. Someone like Altidore (bless him) was never going to have this kind of impact. In fact, Altidore was having an extremely negative impact. What Defoe brings us is goals, positivity and that superstar factor that we've not had for a long time.

This could be a massive turning point for this club.

Amazing the amount of them who genuinely think they signed him because he turned us down. As if we would ever beinterested in signing a 32 year old for that long as our highest earner the fucking idiots

the age alone would ensure Ashley would never permit signing him let alone the wage and contract length

One leg injury from being a £14m noose around their necks. He loses his pace and he's lost his entire game. Not sure that relying on a pacy 32 year old striker is the right thing anyway. 11 goals in 19 games isn't a dire league again doesn't speak £14m to me either.

It's a short term gamble which will pay off, but I think it'll turn in to an ageing headache taking up wages blocking others coming in.

£140kpw on Defoe and Wickham, bet Fletcher is on something stupid as well.

Ah god, they aren't making shit up now that we were interested are they? Jesus Christ. I can really see Ashley signing a 32 year old for £6M and giving him 70k a week. Why do they make these stories up?

It's the type of signing we would have made 8 or 10 years ago. Old player, no resale value, on the decline for massive wages on a multi-year contract - one last big payday for the player.

That said if he keeps them up this year (think he will tbh) then they'll get another lorryload of cash from the new tv deal and they'll see it as money well spent.

Defoe will either be a hit or a massive failure. He's exactly what they need like, a real goalscorer who doesn't need amazing service to thrive as he can score goals often off his own self esteem. If he does keep them up, he'll have been worth the money spent.
