Nicollin happy Cabella didn't join Newcastle

The Montpellier president is hoping his player's recent call-up to France's World Cup squad will see his price tag increase, with the 70-year-old looking to sell for £12 million

Montpellier president Louis Nicollin has described his relief that he did not sell Remy Cabella to Newcastle for €8 million (£6.5m) after the player was called up to France's World Cup squad.

The 24-year-old was originally named on Didier Deschamps's stand-by list for the tournament, but injury to Clement Grenier has seen the midfielder earn a place in the 23-man squad.

Cabella has already stated his desire to leave the Ligue 1 side, with Newcastle in talks to bring him to the Premier League, and Nicollin is confident that exposure in this summer's showpiece can force up his price.

"I'm happy [for Cabella's call-up], because he's a great kid," he told L'Equipe.

"This shows the quality of our academy. It is highly probable that I'll go see all the national team's games.

"I'm happy I didn't sell him €8m to Newcastle."

Cabella scored 14 goals in 37 appearances for Montpellier in Ligue 1 last season.

I can't help chuckle whenever I read about our failed transfer bids in the knowledge that while Pards is eagerly spewing praise on Liverpool and Southampton players, he's the one who will end up getting bummed royally with Ashley's cheap 'n chatty contract bargains.

'We want £12m'

'£6.5m'

'Um, ok, let's say £11m'

'£6.51m'

'How about you get tae fuck?'

'£6.52m'

Chronicle: 'NEWCASTLE UNITED HAVE TWICE UPPED THEIR BID IN A DESPERATE ATTEMPT TO SIGN P.GEORDIO'.

NUFCfans:  'Fuckin forrins being greedy bastards, club have done well to tell them to fuck off.'

This is what happens when you try and make money instead of trying to do well.  Our club asks 'how much can we make on him?' while other clubs ask 'how many games can he win us?'.

You don't get money out of football.  You put money in, you get football out.

In fairness football should have never got itself to the state where it's purely a loss-making business = football out. However it is the reality.

What I don't understand is that if Cabella is this talented, surely £12m is still a snip? - If he sells for £20m+ it's still all profit, why miss out on someone of his quality we can have today if we simply spend what is fair amount for a quality talent.

Because the people in charge are fucking stupid. They care about potential when it can be bought for the cheapest of prices, they don't want the risk of a real investment. If Cabella flops then that's money gone, it's a pessimistic view but one naturally synonymous with penny-pinching dickheads.

Yup precisely..

Especially considering the new TV deal and such 12million certainly isn't as much as what was.

In relative terms of course.

We simply won't go over 10million for a player.

Which is mad considering we payed £15m for Alan Shearer 18 years ago.

Do you want european football and a shot at the title relegation and administration?

We've got 60 mil to spend though remember… the press told us this.

Only a few people know how much it is but it is clear it is not going to be spent. With the lack of spending, TV money and transfer income we are no doubt minted. If Fat Fred was in charge we would be going for Ronaldo (although we wouldn't be in this financial position!) It is fine being sensible but to continue to hoard and take the piss with lowball bids is a joke.

Jack Colback's free transfer has already taken up a 5th of this.

Including the contracted wages trick.

Mike would approve.
