henke
How does the grass pitch retract? There's nowhere for it to retract too. Unless they take it apart in sections like they did at the Silverdome, way back when.

Mole_Toonfan
Retractable pitch apparently, no idea how it works mind
sbnufc
How does the grass pitch retract? There's nowhere for it to retract too. It'll move out under the kop end. The NFL pitch is in place permanently I think, with the football one moving out on top of it. They'll use artificial lights while it's underground http://i.imgur.com/CkuMPGk.png There's a better pic somewhere, hang on
henke
Other places that have retractable pitches like Schalke and the one in Arizona have / need a massive open area outside, the size of football pitch. Maybe spurs are gonna roll theirs up like a big green bog roll? Edit: ahh I see, so they're gonna build a huge hole in the ground under what will become a huge office or something? Why don't they just lay astroturf down as and when needed? Or you know, play NFL on grass?
sbnufc
This one, it'll go under there. If you see the outside plan of the stadium you can see that end is wider than the opposite end, that's why http://i.imgur.com/p2KR43n.jpg
henke
As much as I love the idea, shit like that fascinates me tbh, I'm gonna predict this will never get built.
henke
That picture only shows a cross section of the stand behind the goal. In reality the cavity would need to around 70m wide. So you'd have the entire weight of the stadium, plus 17,000 people jumping up and down, plus the weight of car park area outside... nah.

The NFL deal is signed, with the confirmation of a 2nd playing surface to play their games on. These plans will have been sieved through meticulously and are probably watertight. There's no real reason why a) it cant be done, or b) it won't be done. They'll be submitted in the next couple of weeks I think. Ground work has already begun next to White Hart Lane http://i.imgur.com/yNiGhfC.jpg
henke
I hope it does get built, it just seems like a ridiculous amount of money to spend when you don't have too. The grass pitch will spend about 1 week out of 52 in that big hole in the ground, and building it will be more cost effective than laying a temporary surface? We can all have a good laugh when the weight of 17,000 NFL fans causes the supports to buckle, the "kop" to drop three feet in the middle trapping the grass pitch forever. ponsaelius
disgusting how ambitious and forward thinking some clubs are compared to us

The initial deal is 2 games a year but yeah, can see that rising to 4-8 then there being an actual NFL team in London, using White Hart Lane as their home. Otherwise, like you said, it is completely pointless really. With a quick google I find an article from NFL.com last year which states "The way Mark Waller sees it, the NFL isn't just weighing putting a team in London anymore -- the plan is already in motion." so.. yeah I dont think your concerns about the weight of the stadium on the "hole" are a real problem Other stadia with retractable pitches have a same "hole" under their stand too
henke
I am quite jealous of Spurs, it looks ace. Does anyone know if they'll play at their current ground until this is done or need to move temporarily?

Does anyone know if they'll play at their current ground until this is done or need to move temporarily? They'll need to move as it's being built on the site where the current stadium is. I think they want Wembley, but Chelsea want Wembley for the 17/18 season as well. Chelsea have more money, so they'll probably get it. Spurs will end up in Milton Keynes. Also Spurs are taking Wembley's NFL games off them, they'd probably be told to get fucked
henke
I'm sure smarter people than me have done the sums. But if you look at the current stadia to do this, schalke's stadium has less than 17,000 seats and no car park behind the goal. The one in Arizona has next to fuck built over that end of the stadium. Spurs are gonna put 17,000 seats and an office block over the hole.

henke
http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2008/0730/phoenix_580.jpg That's what I'm on about. Usually when you have a retractable pitch it means an attempt to reduce the weight of one end of the stadium. Yet spurs are going the other way, hats off! leffe186
Are any NFL fields actual grass? Yeah, plenty, at a complete guess I'd say about half. My team's the Browns, and we play on grass. As for the mighty Spurs; apparently we're up for Wembley but Chelsea offered more cash. Rumour is that we now need two years somewhere else, and that's looking more and more like MK Dons. We were also rumored to be trolling West Ham by making them share with us.

Yet spurs are going the other way, hats off! In the Veltins Arena Schalke, the opposite side to the side where the pitch exits has 16,000 seats apparently. I can't find figures for the actual stand, but the stadium is generally symmetrical all the way around, so it's probably close to the there. I assume the pitch will go in what is essentially a giant metal/concrete box under the stand/ground

Spurs are gonna put 17,000 seats and an office block over the hole. It's a huge span, with no support columns (unless the pitch somehow retracts in strips), needing to support a fuck-ton of weight. I can't get my head around how it could be technically possible either.
