What needs to happen then?

Obviously appointing a decent manager and quickly would be one of the first things to do. None of this "All the decision makers are going on holiday so nothing is going to happen for weeks" s*** which we've had before (remember when Joe Kinnear went on holiday during the transfer window when it was his job to sign players?).

Sign more than one player who can take a free kick. We've gone from the days of having Shearer, Solano and Robert to Ryan Taylor.

Sign some players with leadership qualities.

If Ashley is going to stay like he said, then a good, positive appointment is a must.

It doesn't matter if we spend £10m or £150m in the summer. If Carver is in charge it'll be more of the same.

First thing that needs to be done is firing Carver and all the backroom staff including physios etc. Unless that happens there is no point in doing anything else.

The fist pumps, high fives and shaking of hands with Charnley and Carver et al should reveal to anyone in doubt that Ashley will not waver from the status quo. It will be business as usual once the new season arrives.

If Ashley's going to hang around then he needs to reform the club starting at the top.  Charnley needs to go, he's completely out of his depth, he had no backup plan in case Pardew left other than dither and let a coach take over, even the smallest companies have a disaster recovery plan in case something happens that could harm the day-to-day running of the business.  Not us though.

Next, get rid of the coaching staff.  A club at this level cannot afford to keep appointing people to senior coaching roles just because they're locals or friendly with other staff.  If Ashley has a plan to purchase players cheaply, show them off at a higher stage and sell them on for a profit then hiring a bunch of no-hopers who cannot work with the players being brought in, or somehow manage to damage them as players, is possibly the worst thing he could possibly do.

Finally, invest in the fucking squad.  Stop selling players without any plan on replacing them, and only replace them when there is a better alternative available.

There needs to be a proper connect between recruitment and management. There's no hope in our 'strategy' if the players we buy just don't suit the style of play the manager wants.

Above anything else, we need a fucking good 'head coach' to come in and get us enjoying our football again. Then, a shit load of players that actually come to fit a place in the squad, rather than potential resale value.

Genuinely start showing ambition. He's seen on numerous occasions now where spending the bare minimum will get him. Changes are needed from the top down, and continuing to surround himself with inexperienced fuckwits isn't going to get us anywhere near winning something.

First, spend whatever it takes to get the absolute best manager available to us, someone ambitious and tactically competent who knows how to motivate his players and isn't afraid to have a go at teams instead of talking them up in fear. We've been stuck with that king of negative shit for a decade now, dating back to Sourness. Second, wipe the coaching staff pool clean and let the new manager bring his own people in. Our fitness levels and set-pieces in particular have been more appalling than ever this season.

Next, the recruitment policy 100% HAS to change. If we weren't always buying cheap shite, or selling our best players off as soon as an offer comes in then we'd be up fighting for a place in Europe on the last day of the season, not fighting off Hull and Sunderland to survive relegation. You continue to play with fire and you'll get burned eventually.

We can make all these sensible points, but we all know it's gonna be business as usual...

This. I expect nothing else. Ashley is a bastard liar, out to save his own horrid fat warty skin in light of protests. Believe nothing...

I know money spent isnt equal to success or anything like that but if the club honestly think the 34 million in the bank is enough to solve this squads problems they have another thing coming, it was already small in size and the 3-4 out of contract players dont deserve even a 12 month extension so lighter still. The plight we find ourselves in is needing at least 6-8 players and 5-6 of them being first team quality. These need to happen soon to have a chance to bed in and a new manager brought in to have a say on Carr's shopping list. Even if they dont get final say a style of play is needed in order to take the club forward even if it takes another window or 2 to fully assemble the team required.

Bare in mind that was at the end of the last financial years with a mystery 26 million unaccounted for

well there may be more to spend I guess as the money made on Santon, wages saved on Ben Arfa following release (when they usually budget for the life of the contracts wages) sale of Mbiwa and Pardspew comp. However I still dont think that is enough, quality players cost money you can easily spend 15-20 millions on your striker and 10-12 million on a decent back up. Defenders maybe 10 million and wingers 10-15 million.

I think we need 2 strikers, one centre midfielder 2 wingers and 2 centre halves and a left back as a minimum and on top of that you need to beef up the developmental and backup side as they are all full of plodders as proved by this half of the season. We can probably carry 2-5 below par players as long as they are getting minimal game time.

The more you start thinking about what we need the more frightening it becomes as we all know we need better coaches, and fitness and conditioning people we also need a manager that can buy into a blue print whatever that may be. We also need to find new homes for those in contract who are not so good which can be a task in itself.

Just pleased I dont have to get it all done in a few months of the closed season. No doubt we will end up doing something stupid like sign players without a new coach in (repeating cycles again) or we will take 6-10 weeks looking for the right coach/manager only for them to turn us down and we are right back into making a new list.........

One thing is for certain: we are going down next year unless significant changes are made.  With that in mind, we should be ever so slightly positive.

money will come from sales so until that is resolved the status quo will remain, Ashley will not allow us to buy new guys whilst still be lumbered with those who cannot remain.

whilst that may be true from the prospective of registering of squad numbers and squad sizes we have a couple that are looking to be gone purely from run down contracts a couple more on a year or less we may try and peddle just to get a fee for them. I dont think there is an excuse this year that we cannot cut the deadwood enough in order to bring numbers in. Money sitting in surplus in the bank also means we dont have to sell to buy this year. This may be one of the only years this happens so we have to make it count. Although I dont trust the club with my season ticket money anymore god knows how many fuck ups they will make from 30-60 million being spent
