Just right now there are at least half-a-dozen players on the cusp, probably more, and while you can make decent arguments for each one you have to leave some out. And in the scramble people end up saying silly stuff like “not picking TAA is insane” or “he’s not picking X because they’re young” which is demonstrably false. leffe186
Tonight will be really interesting and I’m kinda glad Kane is out because I want to see what Tuchel’s plan is without him. I’m concerned. Never been confident about Watkins at this level - that one finish notwithstanding - and his form this year is not inspiring. Plus he’s so different from Kane the whole team needs to change. What other options are there? Solanke isn’t amazing but does have some similarities with Kane, not blessed with real pace but capable of coming very deep, holding the ball up and distributing it well. But he’s injured. I’ve heard Rashford, Gordon and Bowen from this squad mentioned and I just don’t see it - maybe Rashford for more physical presence and the willingness to shoot. And who else is out there? Delap is injured, DCL is big and physical but a permacrock and just not good enough. Nketiah hasn’t set the world alight. Ivan Toney?? It’s actually a massive problem. Delap would have been the logical “next man up” if he’d a) picked a functioning club; and b) was fit. Pretty desperate really given the plethora of good English strikers we had in the 1990s. Fuck Mourinho and Guardiola for destroying the two up top culture.

In the U21s - no guarantee they’ll make the step up - literally only one player is listed as a “centre-forward”, Mubama at Man City (Stoke). He’s played 9 games for Stoke…and scored 2 goals. We’ve got a kid I really rate on loan at Oxford, Will Lankshear, who has 3 from 5. Supposedly the top English scorer in the Premier League is a winger - Jaidon Anthony. Genuine question - what other options are there? Am I missing somebody obvious?
Disco
Not strictly an England issue like. Barely any teams have depth at centre forward like. Portugal have Father Time and Ramos Spain have whichever bozo who isn’t a striker they play there. France have a load of lads who are better from wide Argentina have Alvarez and Lautaro Germany’s all unproven Brazil’s are all are shite

Curva Sud Milano
During our last dinner with friends we discussed about the best English midfielders of the last 30 years. We all agreed on the top three but each of us had a different opinion about the first place ...obviously this is seen from an Italian perspective. I'm curious to know your top three and in what order.
RobsonsWonderland
My first trip to watch England at Wembley tonight. Had hoped we could make a qualifier but at least Wales should add a little something extra to the friendly. McCormick
Loved Scholes but Gerrard was a better CM imo. Hate Liverpool but the guy, in his prime, had it all.

There were 14 of us... 8 voted for Scholes, 5 for Gerrard, and 1 for Lampard. I'm pro-Scholes but the objection from someone who voted for Gerrard was right... Scholes played in a great team, Gerrard didn't.

I always thought Gerrard was quite a selfish player and would go for a glory pass or shot too much. If I was a player I think I’d much rather play with Scholes. I think I rate Gerrard less than the vast majority of people tbh.

It may be a cliché, but Gerrard could have done what Scholes did at Man United; the same can't be said the other way around.

I agree but I also think that Scholes style of play means that I think he'll always be more appreciated in Europe than he is in his own country IMO. I think if you ask the Spanish, Italian and other big European countries their opinions on him will be higher than our own.

I agree... In Italy we all know that Totti was infinitely better than Del Piero but I'm convinced that many "foreigners" consider Del Piero a better player. Perhaps we Italians make the same mistake considering Scholes better than Gerrard.

A player that was underrated a tad at the time leading to then became massively overrated by those saying he was underrated He was never a regular for Man Utd and England for a reason. Very good player but not sure he was even a CM.

Interpolic
Also Scholes came through as a centre forward before dropping back within a season or 2 iirc.
