In Italy we all know that Totti was infinitely better than Del Piero but I'm convinced that many "foreigners" consider Del Piero a better player. Perhaps we Italians make the same mistake considering Scholes better than Gerrard. Totti is a God. Scholes was a better footballer than Gerrard. Gerrard was an effective player, as was Lampard but they both had quite clear limitations at the highest level. Scholes controlled games of football from midfield. I was probably too young to appreciate Berti in his prime. edit: Albertini? Same comment as Berti. Edited October 9, 2025 by McCormick
Tsunami
Can we discuss who was the worst tackler? Scholes just couldn’t, Gerrard was a snide, dirty cunt and Lampard avoided. They all had different strengths, I’d probably go Gerrard. It’d be interesting what other Premier League players of the that era think. Further back Gazza was, well Gazza. Bryan Robson; now there was a complete midfielder.

For England he was shifted out to the left under Eriksson to accommodate Gerrard and Lampard. Nope. Often dropped for the big games as Fergie knew the midfield would get overrun. Fergie seemed to trust him more later in his career and clearly rated him. However he was slow and physically not strong and quite hot headed with a ridiculous tackling style. Gattuso had stamina and aggression out of this world but was technically very limited. Albertini was highly overrated and Berti was an atypical midfielder, I wouldn't call him a CM. I really liked Dino Baggio (Dino not Roberto), especially during his years at Parma...he knew how to do everything and he did it well. To find CM dominants, however, you have to go back to the 1980s... Tardelli, Oriali, and Ancellotti were three beasts. In Tonali, for example, I see a lot of Tardelli and a bit of De Rossi... not Pirlo or Gattuso.

Giggs was a winger most of his career also which you’d expect to be rotated more. There were times Giggs even played ahead of Scholes in midfield late on iirc. Excellent technical player. Not world class for me and not strictly CM for me also. Edited October 9, 2025 by LFEE

WilliamPS
I think Tuchel has now moved to the right formation, with Bellingham to come back 4231 is a better fit with two sitting than 433, and he’s kept width and pace on the flanks…but that 11 is not going to trouble the best teams. Except for a couple of positions there really isn’t much elite level depth in the squad.

I don’t care that much frankly And to give an answer to the argument Gerrard was the better CM. He could drag poorer teams along and was far more effective in a team that didn’t have the ball dominance Man Utd had. If NUFC ever had to sign one I’d of went for Gerrard. He’d make a bigger impact on a more regular basis in games. Scholes never grasped games single-handedly like Gerrard.

Maybe not to you which is fair enough. My main point however still stands that I always felt he was left out of the biggest games. Which to me goes against the theory of the greatest English CM since 1996 or whenever it was suggested.
