Strange that City would be against it considering Guardiola complained about the window going into the season, no idea why he would complain about it when the ownership wants it kept as is.

Likely has more to do with this impacting their ability to buy and shuttle players between the clubs they own.

Rafa wants the window to close before the first game, Newcastle board 'nahhh'

Finally competing with Chelsea and city.

is this an actual thing or is it something Richard Keys and Andy Gray have made up for BEIN Sports?

Are they saying its un-fair because other European teams could do deals with each other after our window has closed ?

That's why end of August is perfect. It's before the European competitions start, most of the leagues are only 1-3 weeks in, just leave it be.

I think it's the part where other European teams can still buy our players.

Say your Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern etc, and you fancy a player like Dele Ali. You wait until our window shuts and then you buy Ali, leaving Tottenham unable to strengthen after losing one of their best players.

For me that's a massive flaw, easily sorted by bringing in rules so we can't sell either when our window shuts.

THEY COULD JUST NOT SELL HIM

But why even leave ourselves open to that risk? You'll also have unhappy players for half a season or so, transfer requests going in, where as now, everyone is in the same boat.

To improve our game?  To have settled squads at the start of the season?

Fuck that noise, some dirty forrins might FORCE us to sell them a player even though we're under absolutely no obligation to even entertain it.

Much easier to say no to a player/agent when the answer is "we cant replace you so you can't go" as opposed to now where it's "there's not a lot of time to replace you."

The first couple years may have some headaches for clubs trying to hold onto players but once a couple precedents are set it will be fine. This will force all of Europe to change the timeline on which they move in the market since so much money is coming out of the PL.

Because of that I think it's very possible this starts a change across other leagues. UEFA may even decide it's a good thing to have final squads before the CL qualifiers.

It's fine for the big clubs to say no, what about clubs who need money? They might rely on buying from another league who's season has also started. The whole idea is shit Imo.

If they need money then sell before the deadline. This doesn't prevent clubs from doing anything they do now, it just shifts the timeline.

Let's take Jota at Brentford for example. Say our league has started, an internal La Liga transfer happens, and they then see Jota. Offer is too good to reject but they're screwed until January. Spanish league closes end of May, the team who goes up through the Play Offs there don't go up until June. Why are they going to agree to shorten the space they can strength their squad just because a dozen Premier League clubs aren't happy? Situation is bollocks.

A. They don't sell him.

Yup.

Two of the best players in the league are "injured" and unavailable because of the current system. Depending on how long this takes they could miss 8% of the PL season for no reason. It's a farce.

It's more an example that some teams lower down need that money though. They could take in £5m, go to someone like Hearts or Aberdeen and buy a replacement for £1m, everyone's happy.

Change the rules though and that doesn't happen. Premier League rules football again. Yay.

Money rules football and the Premier League is swimming in it right now, but that just means they can look out for their own interests. There's a competitive issue with not closing the window before the season starts and the PL has every right to decide they want to fix that.

If that has an impact on a newly promoted La Liga club or a Scottish club then they'll need to adjust or UEFA can do something about it.

Not many leagues or clubs have the financial means to sign a big-name player from the Premier League anyway. And players seldom move from the lower English leagues overseas either.

Whether the deadline is before the season or at end of August, the selling club could always choose not to sell if they can't get a replacement in. 35m for Carroll, new or old transfer deadline, we would still sell. At least with the new deadline, Liverpool and Southampton could settle the Coutinho and Van Dijk situations, move on and focus on their first match.
