Groups may be more interesting at the expense of the knockout phase. Depending on the quality of your team you could also have the competition practically won after the group stage if you were to knockout 2 of your biggest rivals early on. Personally I like seeing the biggest and best teams fight it out late on in the competition. For a quarter or more of them to go out at the group stage because of an unlucky draw would suck in my opinion. Also unfrotunately from a pure financial perspective UEFA will always want the big teams in the late rounds if possible. Loads more people will be hyped for a Bayern vs Real quarter final than a Leicester vs Genk one and more would tune in, etc. The biggest games with the biggest and best teams are just more attractive to most.
