The other games today 2018/19

Sad news that. Certainly not a great image ahead of the WC. Have friends from near Bilbao, big Athletic fans, so would have been there last night.

Can imagine a fair few Moscow fans got a good hiding from their police mind.

One saving grace is they got knocked out, so no other European city will have to put up with neanderthal Russian hooligans. Think a ban on travelling fans in European competition from teams representing Russia could be a step to take.

Heard Man United and Liverpool fans earlier on in the season talking about their experiences going to watch their teams in Russia - had nothing but positives to say about it. Countering all scare-mongering flying around at the time. Can't deny that there is a hooligan problem in Russia, but watch this get blown up by certain English media. They'll make out going to the WC now seem like you're on for a death wish.

A ban on all traveling fans a step to take because some thugs met another set of thugs and it ended up in tragedy with a police officer suffering a stroke? And the follow-up paragraph makes it even more ludicrous. The sad reality is that in this particular instance a group of far-left nutters met a group of far-right nutters. Always amazes me how with all the technology available to the relevant authorities, all the black lists and databases, these things still happen from time to time. Absolutely bewildering, considering resources involved.

And I am not even talking about Russia in particular. Arsenal - Cologne game had a whole bunch of people fired for blatant failure to maintain order written all over it. I actually stopped watching Brazilian and Argentinian football a few years back, passing interest now, purely due to some mental things in the stands and around the stadiums. But still regret not going to Brazil for the World Cup, brilliant country.

Now, I am the last person on this forum to say anything nice about that set of pigs (there is no such thing as a "Moscow" fan, it's kinda like calling someone a London or a Manchester fan when one of their clubs are away in Europe), but they do bring a ton away, domestically and abroad. Any club in the world who have that luxury/problem will admit to a certain scum element among such visitors. One of their charmers was actually detained in Munich (was involved in the whole Marseille thing) on Wednesday. Unfortunately, we live in a day and age when being a mentalist is too appealing to some. And the histerical media is always hungry for more. Some dude punches a horse, every NUFC fan does. Some idiots racially abused Batshuayi yesterday, must mean that every Atalanta fan is a racist. Proper hardmen spend a night out in Bilbao looking for trouble with another set of proper hardmen, a tragedy happens, must ban everyone from there. Problem solved. Not.

Incidents like this need serious investigation and severe punishments must be handed out to those responsible and yes, dare I say it as someone who saw quite mental things in the stands in my youth - that includes police officers who fail on duty due to lack of professionalism. These things shouldn't happen anywhere in 2018, end of.

And the whole WC thing is already tarnished, cos we are evil, hellbent on destroying the universe, challenging The Donald's precious lifestyle and all that. So nothing new.

Thoughts and prayers to the family of the officer.

Was referring to Spartak Moscow fans as 'Moscow fans' simply because it was convenient to do so. Quite obvious that I'd be referring to the team from Moscow in question. Very much aware that there are many teams in Moscow; CSKA, Lokomotiv, Dynamo, Torpedo, Spartak, FC. Please excuse any that I've missed.

Tend to agree with most of what you say. There are idiots in every walk of life, and sadly these sorts of people involved with nearly every football club around. That being said, it would appear there can be steps to take to minimise their effect on the surrounding world. .

Would such a sanction on away travel to and from certain clubs not force the clubs themselves, as well as local/regional/national authorities to take a greater look at what is actually causing such a 'problem'. There is of course the situation where the clubs quite frankly couldn't care less, but I'm certain the genuine fan groups would have a problem with such sanctions. Fans of other clubs that have no record of violence within their supporter base would suddenly be annoyed that they cannot travel to see their team against certain teams. I don't believe that all the fans that travelled to Bilbao we're out there for a tear up, but there must be ways to root out the supporters who are travelling and finding trouble easy to come across.

That would surely put some pressure on those in power to route out the troublesome factions of the supporter base, and make it a bit clearer they're not welcome. I highly doubt any other club in European competition would welcome such fans to their cities or stadiums.

WC is always going to be criticized unless it's in Western Europe. Same in Brazil, South Africa etc. Don't worry, the WC in Brazil was great and so will the one in Russia be.

Agreed. Plus when it's held in the third world you have the added bonus of hosts embarrassing themselves horrifically during it.

On the pitch you mean? Cause I've been to World Cups in Asia, Europe and South America and have thought them all to be very good tournaments from a fans perspective off the pitch. No doubt in my mind this one will be as good as the others off the pitch.
