Definitely true, backup GK is always a tricky thing though. You have to find someone who's cheap, doesn't want to play, and is also really good. Not an easy scouting mission.

 

TBH its one of the best jobs in sport though, right up there with backup QB in the NFL. There are some dudes who have made millions never touching the ball for NFL teams.

The recent run of wins has clouded a lot of fans judgement.  To say this brilliant form over the past 7 games is due to Dubravka being in goal is ludicrous. There are a lot of factors involved in our great run of wins and I will admit that Dubs being in goal has contributed.  However, I was shitting myself whenever a cross or corner came into our box whilst he's been in goal.

If Dubravka does end up staying the next logical question is.. do people think he will keep Pope out of the team when he comes back? 

 

I have to admit, if he doesn't it seems pretty short sighted to keep hold of him for the sake of what, maybe one more league game.

To be honest I’m still not sure if Dubs is just benefiting from the fact we’re defending a lot better than we did when he was last asked to deputise.

 

He might still be a liability but we haven’t put him in as many positions where he can prove beyond all doubt he’s shot.

He isn't as good at alot of goal keeping attributes as Pope.  However looking at how easy it is for him to receive the ball back and distribute the ball is so much better than Pope. Its laughable how bad Pope is with his feet kicks straight out or straight to the opposition ultimately don't help the fluidity of our game.

 

I think this decision is a good one as gives Pope longer to recover and keeps the changes to the back 5 to a minimum while on a good run.

 

However if we have offered him loads more money or a 2 year extension then I will be pissed. Iam fine with him staying  as is and revisiting in the summer when we have had a larger sample of games to see how it panned out.

 

All depends what we needed to offer to make him stay on.

I was out on the piss last weekend in Copenhagen with a couple of mates including former manure and Denmark keeper Anders Lindegaard, who played with Pope in Burnley. He thinks Pope is easily the best shot-stopper in the league, but also said that he had never seen a professional footballer be this bad with his feet  He also think that Pope is one of the funniest blokes he have ever met and they are still in contact regularly.

I think I’ve told the story on here before. But when he was coming through at Bury Town. A few mates played in the same team as him.
 

James Scowcroft (ex Ipswich/Leicester and others) was player-coach at the time. They said he had to basically spend all pre-season with Popey trying to get him to kick it properly from goal kicks, clearances, passes etc  believe it or not. He used to be far worse! 

 

He’s obviously always been supremely talented as a ‘keeper’. I think Charlton signed him not long after that. 
 

I suppose it shows how much the position has changed. As you probably would have got away with it back when he was younger. 
 

Weirdly, his brother Josh, who is also a keeper but playing at a lower level. Looks pretty good with his feet by comparison. He was always regarded as the better player growing up. But he’s not even 6ft.

This speaks to just how easy pro's make things we consider 'standard' look. Up to and including 'kicking ball far'. Get on a regular side footy pitch, go the to the six yard box and try and kick the ball so it travels through the air and lands midway inside the other half without bouncing. Even that isn't as easy as it seems like it should be to mere mortals.

Totally understand the logic of keeping him til the summer especially if there's no fee involved but a new contract is a genuinely mental decision. He was absolutely trash last season, cost us numerous points and suddenly because he's managed to not throw in about 6-7 routine shots on target against him in a run when we've defended superbly and he's done a couple of decent passes people think he should be first choice, sell Pope, new contract  it's insanity.
