Rafa Benitez considering making up to five changes to Newcastle side - as U23s train with first team

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is desperately searching for a way to shock his Magpies side back into form

By Chris Waugh

Rafa Benitez is considering making up to five changes to his Newcastle United XI at Wembley as he aims to shock his side out of their late-season slump.

The Magpies have lost three successive matches since passing the 40-point mark last month, and Benitez was left angered by his side’s woeful first-half display at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

Forward Ayoze Perez admitted that Newcastle played as if “we were on our holidays” during the first 45 minutes of the 2-1 defeat by Watford and, though United improved during the second period, Benitez is still considering a raft of changes.

The Spaniard will assess the fitness - and also motivation - levels of his players on the training ground, before deciding who will start against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday evening.

Given that United play three times inside eight days, Benitez is keen to rotate anyway - but some players may be dropped at Wembley due to form, rather than fitness.

“We will try to change players to see if we can have fresh legs, but we tried it at Watford and it didn’t work,” Benitez said.

“We tried to change the system at Watford too. We cannot blame anyone in particular for why we were bad against Watford, because everyone was bad - but in the second half, everyone was much better.

“We have to see how the players are after the next few days, see if we have any knocks or problems, and then decide if we can play with the same team or if we have to change three, four or five players or whatever.

“We will be playing against a very good team and we have to be sure that we put a strong team on the pitch.”

Christian Atsu’s knee operation has ruled him out of United’s final two games, Ciaran Clark is also a doubt for Wembley with a knee problem, while a few members of the Newcastle first-team squad are also being assessed after picking up niggles.

As a result, Benitez called a few members of the Under-23 side up to train with the first team last week, including defender Josef Yarney and goalkeeper Paul Woolston - and they have taken part in sessions again this week,

“We have had a few injuries, but we are fine because we have had two or three young players like Yarney and Woolston who have been training with us, so we are fine,” Benitez added.

“They will train with us this week too because Atsu has had his operation, Clark has a problem, and then we have two or three other players who are not perfect or have not been involved so the young players will get a chance in training.”

Newcastle are currently 10th in the table, but three others teams are level on points with United and below the Magpies on goal difference alone.

And Benitez accepts his side only have a chance of leaving Wembley with a win if they reproduce their second-half display against Watford, rather than their first-half horror show.

“We don’t have any momentum now. After three weeks, we are making too many mistakes,” Benitez added.

“Even if you put in effort, still it is not enough if you make mistakes.

“When we needed to win, everybody was really, really focused, people didn’t make mistakes and they knew they had to run, do this and do that.

“Now we are running, but we are late. We are making mistakes, and we are making far too many because maybe we do not have the same concentration levels we had before.

“If we play like we did in the first half at Watford, we have no chance against Tottenham. If we play like we did in the second half, then maybe.

“We have been talking about the team improving since we were safe but it is difficult for us to keep this concentration for a while, so we will see if we can do it in the next two games.”

Hope Fernandez gets a chance

In reality i'd love to see both him and Roberts get chances in the last two games. Both have seemed to just drag the rest of the U23 team through games this season.

Although I do like Barlaser and that Wilson who's broke into the team in the last few weeks aswell.

Could have done without Chelsea putting pressure on these arseholes. Now both our remaining opponents have something to play for, got to keep the score down in the anticipated loss, as the pack behind us are catching up on our goal difference advantage.

Their first choice CM’s Dembele and Dier are out for this FWIW, might see Moussa.  Probably won’t make a difference with Ali, Son, Eriksen and Kane in there like
