Japan game has been a shitshow on the BBC. Commentators took about 15 minutes to realise what was going on, even claiming Japan fans had it wrong and shouldn’t be celebrating

The Japanese fans with their phone screen showing Japan 2nd on the standings and them saying it has not been updated yet.

Going out on fair play seems shitty tbf.

Better than going out on goals scored during qualification like Lawrenson suggested. You wouldn't want to be on the same points and GD as Australia.

Well yeah, none of them feel good.

Typical Japan going through on fair play like.

Didn’t see who pundit was next to Osman on BBC but he was raging “I hope Japan get battered next round”

That seems canny unfair like, it's not their fault that they're more well-behaved than Senegal.

What an awful tournament for Africa. Nigeria and Senegal both should have gone through, but really just wasted the opportunity when it was there for them. Teranga Lions had a tough match today, but should have won their last match if not for errors. I am happy for Japan, anyway, a hardworking side with an entertaining style of play. All of their matches were surprisingly enjoyable. Believe that either of England and Belgium would walk over them, though.

Fwiw, fair play is just a rubbish way to decide a group. Just draw lots at that point or organise a shootout. Yellow cards are entirely arbitrary decisions from the referee and reflect nothing about the quality of a side's play.

Yellow cards (in the main bar a very dodgy ref) are not random choice!
