His strength's are not when we have a mass of possession. He's very limited, but he'll always look worse when we dominate the ball and more of a technical requirement is needed

Not encouraging? We know his limitstions, we've seen him make over 100 Premier League apearances. He's thanfully out of the stadting XI now, he's a good professional, will keep himself in top shape and step back into being a reliable squad player. He'll be behind Miley soon.

Aye.

He's a squad player for us like. Will do a grand job of closing teams out but that's it.

Love his effort, his desire, his local pride, everything. Love his fragility to some degree, reminds me that he's just a local and living the dream. Will always back him for that. Just won't take us to the next level. Really hope he's happy being a squad man for us tbh, that kinda desire to play for us is infectious to some degree.

I’d keep him as a squad player - I still think he’s a better player than he’s often given credit for - but the club might just look at Miley coming through and think it is time to cash in.

Did you find it encouraging?

I don't know why I need to find individual performances against Bromley encouraging from players who I've seen play better against PSG?

Yeah. I think there's enough there to sugest he's a good squad player for us undoubtedly. Even a first teamer in certain circumstances. Just he needs to shake the habit of playing the same standard as opposition when they're of a lower standard.

You don’t need to.

I’ll put it another way - if you have a squad player who hasn’t played well for a while and isn’t getting minutes, in my view you want him to come in and play well against inferior opposition and give you a reason not to drop them.

The ott stuff about Longstaff and Almiron is so fucking stupid  They are what they are.

As a 6th choice CM (in the hope that today convinced Howe that Miley is ready for more responsibility), who is content to stay and fight for his place, knows Howes system in and out, is a great fit for the group socially and who loves the club and the area, I really struggle to imagine any club being able to find any better.

He improved in the second half too, not that it changed the ridiculous abuse he got in the match thread. Can't remember him putting a foot wrong.

Is it only our good players that are allowed to have bad sub-par performances without being unreasonably criticized?

Bit lenient to call him a 6th choice CM when he was starting every game a few weeks ago

Not sure if lenient is what you meant or if it was sarcasm

Yeah, and now he isn't. With Willock in most cases coming on before him too. Hopefully Miley jumped ahead of him today too.

Another way to think of it is would you be happy if we spent 15 to 20 million signing either him or Miggy for our squad now?

Personally not and I know new players would be judged a lot harder

If we were in a position to spend 15 to 20 million on a 5th/6th choice CM I imagine I'd be ecstatic about how things were going regardless of who it was.

I beg to differ on the last statement. I think Longstaff is judged harsher than any new signing would be, which is a common theme for most local squad players with limited ability we've seen through the last ~30 years.

He wasn’t as awful as some are saying but he didn’t influence the game much in any which way. Was surprised to his occasional poor touch and he seemed slow on the ball again. I would say he neither added or took away from us today, given that I would’ve liked to have seen a youngster try out but there you go.

We will face teams this season where SL’s willingness to run will help us out.
As for next year, depends on where we’re at.

Agreed. Lonfstaff isn't necessarily 5th choice either. He offers different characteristics to both Miley and Willock as our current second string. I reckon Howe looks at them in that regard too.

Miley appears to be more akin to Bruno, then the other 4 are all more physically similar with their own unique capabilities.

Undoubtedly though, Joelinton and Tonali are our key, consistent chappies.

Cant see us getting 15-20m for either. Its been quite some time since they had a longer period of being in good form and its not like they have the future ahead of them. For that price they would expected to be ready to put in good displays from the getgo.

Longstaff is ‘PSR-free’ on our books at present; replacing him with a player of similar standard for those sort of fees would reduce our PSR headroom.

Sean Longstaff is at least a 20m midfielder for me. In the modern age. Think people saying he isn't are doing him a disservice. You cannot replace him for that.

When we finished 4th he was excellent. But it also seemed that he needed to play his way into games since he just kept going.

Whether that was down to minutes or confidence I'm not sure - but he won't be getting those minutes here and so can't just be a squad option.

Maybe the best thing for him is to go in that case.

Always felt in these sort of cup games against lower league opposition he looks really poor, in a sense that it looks like his level.

But then surround him with good players and against better opposition and he looks serviceable.

In contrast, you put on people like Gordon, Bruno and Hall and you could see they were levels above the opponent.
