Guest elbee909
How the hell will Roeder know who he can bring in if he doesnt have a transfer budget?.How does he know what quality he can target? There is no point scouting a 10m striker if you find out 2 weeks before the window opens you only have 5m to spend. The way we do transfers is a complete joke. with about 87 clubs right behind us and spending more than we do, on better players, which is of course why they are all in europe regularly and we aren't And we've won the Intertoto Cup now. Onwards and upwards.

YOU explain how our transfer policy is a joke, considering we are one of the highest placed clubs in the country over the past decade ? Serious question. Who exactly have we bought who you consider a joke, and why, and who do you not consider to be a joke signing, and why ? Then tell us how many of our players would be welcome at the vast majority of other premiership clubs.

80
Based on the fact that since the transfer window was introduced we've repeatedly failed to operate effectively within its confines, I certainly won't be expecting us to make any better fist of it this time. I'd like to think we'll have learnt from our mistakes, but when did we ever do that at this club? I believe we've suffered more than any other set of supporters from its imposition. A bloody terrible thing. Why don't they understand how to use it?

How do you think we're every going to pay that off without a takeover? Well, if you would rather we hadn't bothered attempting to qualify for europe and build a good team, fair enough. Except if we did do that, and spent years simply existing and not attempting to challenge, you wouldn't be very happy. Or we could have left the stadium as it was. At least you have said you would prefer the club not to spend in january, unlike macbeth and his monkey who are noticeably saying nothing until they see how things go then criticise if it doesn't work out. Mind you, not spending in january would meet with much opposition, it seems the majority of supporters do want the club to spend more big money. Then call the policy a joke ? How odd, and ironic. I don't think this is what he meant though, when he called it a joke. PS. Most clubs have a debt, even ManU do now, due to being taken over.

Aye we were organised and pulled off a blinder! the fact that we currently have the 8th best defensive record - while we still have one of the lowest scoring rates - suggests that the manager targetted and used his budget correctly on the right areas, and still needs a higher priority in this area. Unless you think the defenders are going to score the goals if Martins and Sibierski are injured.

Guest Bellers
We don't need any defenders? Have you been watching us with your eyes closed for the last year? You can sit here all night and praise Taylor and co, but the fact is Bramble is inept, Moore goes missing, and Ramage is too slow. Thats before you get on to the full backs. On top of this a couple more injuries and we'll be playing a back four full of seventeen year olds. The fact is we need a couple of lads who can bring experience and consistency to the defence. Man Utd made a profit of 46m for the year ending June 2005, £58.3m the year before that, That's how they will pay their debt off. We on the other hand have just recorded a loss of £12m, yes the stadium expansion was necessary but that only cost £42 million IIRC which was to be paid off at £2m a year, the £45m + is made up of bad management by the board, giving Souness money we can't afford and not controlling the wage bill. The money from the extra 16,000 seats was supposed to give the club an edge financially on the other teams around us yet we're now operating at a loss, you talk about "would I rather not have tried to qualify for Europe" but the club was qualifying for Europe before we were in debt, even Spurs have just qualified and they're debt free. You didn't answer my question btw. How do you see the club paying off £87m+ of debt without a takeover and without the club making any sort of profit? A debt that seems to get bigger every year? Karjala
I reckon our defence sucks too....BUT CB's-wise: I'd be happy to have the Taylor, Ramage and Huntington along with a decent experienced CB. FB's: Babayaro and Bernard arent good enough and need to be shipped out, as does Carr. IMO that leaves us needing 4 FB's and 1 CB.... RW, LW - Happy with (Solano, Milner, Zog, Duff) CM - could do with one more attacking one OR Dyer to STAY FIT (Emre, Parker, Butt, Dyer) ST - Big, physical good-in-the-air Striker would be nice, cant see Sibierski being around more than this season, and if he is, it will be a very limited role. As much as ive liked him, we need more quality if we are gonna be at the top. (Martins, Owen, Shola & New Signing)
black_n_white
2-3 players in i reckon....Possibly all loans and maybe 1 permanent deal for a left back. No chance with crouch...far too expensive and why would he leave liverpool for us?? plus liverpool wouldn't want to let him go! Sibby can do an effective job till summer. Got a feeling it won't be glamour household names but surely they got to be better than our current fullbacks!!!!

The fact is we need a couple of lads who can bring experience and consistency to the defence. read the posts properly. I didnt' say we didn't need defenders, I said our priority is forwards. As I said, we have a good defensive record, and if Martins or Sibierski is injured, who is going to score the goals ? I think that you must have been watching us with your eyes closed for the last year, if you are unable to see this fact, along with that the problem with the team has been an inability to hold the ball up front, support from midfield, resulting in us conceding ground, possession, and being put under pressure. Our improvement lately has been because sibierski is holding the ball better than Ameobi, Martins has found his shooting boots, and Butt being a better defender than parker has helped Emre get forward more. YOu must be blind if you can't see this, therefore we have a problem if one of these forward players are injured.
gazza ladra
Duff? So we don't need any defenders then? Campbell of a free wouldn't have helped? Would've, should've.... the club should've picked up Campbell and a few others... true. Neill and Bridge would've been nice. We do need defenders. But without Martins and Sibierski we'd be out of Europe and in the relegation zone right now. Solid acquisitions. Duff has not be spectacular, but for 5m is a steal. There isn't a club that wouldn't take him for that... if we can ever get Dyer, Martins, and Duff together on the pitch...

Yeah but we could have picked up those players AND the defenders, thats the point! We obviously still had funds available with the failed late bids so the club is firmly to blame for fucking about until the last day or two of the window! You didn't answer my question btw. How do you see the club paying off £87m+ of debt without a takeover and without the club making any sort of profit? A debt that seems to get bigger every year? Some of us said that the Souness era would result in what is happening. However, accountants and many other people on here and toontastic thought otherwise. What do you want me to say ? Do you think a consortium would simply wipe out the debt out of sheer goodwill ? If you think otherwise, you are as deluded as ever, like many others. They will want something back. You should address this question to those on here, and your daft chums on toontastic, who still think the club have a bottomless pit of money, which I don't. Most clubs have a debt. It is considered to be a "manageable" debt, although the wage bill ratio needs to come down. Simple fact is, as I said, most clubs have a debt. Those that don't, get nowhere. I think its absolutely amazing that so many people on here think the club have a bottomless pit of money and should carry on buying half a team every january, then again in August, yet you ask me this question. Anyway I am tired of you and your mates' double standards and general "damned if they do damned if they don't" idiocy. Stop buying quality players and don't complain when you see true mediocrity as a result, if that is what you want.
Cajun
Not going to comment on the fact that with at least 2 failed bids on the last day of the transfer window we obviously had the money for defenders but f*cked up due to poor planning NE5? Also not going for free's like Campbell, Trabelsi...

Stop buying quality players and don't complain when you see true mediocrity as a result, if that is what you want. Or keep buying them and watch them sold off on the cheap a la Leeds, would you prefer us to go that way as long as we keep spending money? As for your "deluded as ever" comment, I put that down to you not being able to answer the question properly. All the talk of a possible buy out would include paying off or huge debts, of course they will want something in return but the only way to make money in football is for the club to be successful. Manageable debt? The fact that it gets bigger every year doesn't make it look like it's being managed at all.
thomas
I think the overall positive impact to the team would be greater were we to bring in two class fullbacks than a striker. Improving not only the play we get from that position but the play of zog/duff and dyer/milner/solano in front of them. Bringing in a big name striker to feed off the scraps we're currently providing, while relying on the same shaky defense ... I dunno, I just don't see the benefit there. At least with more solidarity going forward (and defending) I'd be more confident of the midfield chipping in a few more and not actually having to rely on le Sib and Martins as much. edit: and before our defensive record is brought up, let me reiterate: it IS shaky. Given has saved our ass so many points it's unreal. how long do you want to ride that luck?
