Joelinton: suspended for Ipswich, not Brentford

Recommended Posts

It was part of the reason that I was a bit surprised when we bought Barnes, like I kind of just accepted that we weren't going to play Joelinton that much at LW anymore. Thought it was because we needed him to cover CM for depth. Happy he's back and performing at LW like in 22/23. That said, do we how well he works at LW when Willock isn't there to interchange? Did we try that? I think his strengths are still best suited for the wing anyways.

Ya that’s why I thought we’d be placing AG at right wing and keeping the big and little Joe deadly combo. Adding Tonali was the upgrade on CM are.

assumed we’d also go with that style in the CL and just press like maniacs and kill the games.

@Erikse putting it this way, I genuinely thought we’d see Bruno a right sided 8, Tonali as a 6. But the two actually legitimately covering for one another. Willock as the LCM and etc. I thought the evolution in attacking play was a ? But I assumed we’d just go for broke and we’d see Willock develop into this all action attacking mid we saw at the end of the 22/23. Joelinton would continue to add goals. Isak would be lights out and we were going to bank on AG being an all around improvement on the intensity of Miggy.

Granted I want Maddison to play that wide right role and was annoyed we didn’t get him.

Yeah I think the expectations before the season didn't end up being correct, but the Willock injuries were so annoying. I honestly think we would've had to deal with rumours of all the top clubs wanting him right now if he stayed fit. A bit extreme, but he was only 22 in that 22/23 season and he already had some very exciting abilities. The sky was the limit for him.

I think Maddison would've been fantastic for us personally.

Yes, the form he was in before he had that nasty injury, thought he was destined for greatness and deserved an England call-up soon. We finished 7th last year, imagine just having him fit 50% more last season? FFS

Yes, I was wondering if it was Maddison + Tonali!

If Guardiola was fielding Joelinton it would have been called a 'false midfielder' or something and some tactical masterstroke. I think he's been better in the middle than some give credit for but its not quite his best. He sits somewhere half way between a left sided central midfielder box to box type and a winger. He somehow remains influential and involved in the general play despite theoretically being up on the wing. He's massively tactically flexible without complaint or without willingness to do all the dirty work of whatever position he finds himself in

Was the perfect opportunity for players like Anderson and Tonali to make a name for themselves playing every week, though! Oh, wait..[emoji38]

Think he's been great as a midfielder tbh. just think we're different side with Willock on that LCM spot.

Am I right in thinking he got a decent amount go G/A when playing on the wing when we finished 4th ?

At the back end of the season we qualified for the Champions League he played a lot on the left and he ended up scoring  6 goals and assisting 2 from that position in 15 appearances there in the Premier League.

Yeah, I would say one of the main improvements has been in our build up play and possession.

Joelinton can sometimes get caught on the ball in the centre and be a bit loose with his passing amidst the congestion in there. Willock is much tighter in those spaces having coming through at Arsenal and being used to that more intricate play.

Roaming from out wide Joelinton ends up facing play more often, and can also afford more time on the ball as he has more space.

I think my stats from last page was Premier League specific, the one you linked includes the cup. Nothing wrong with including the cup though, we met lots of PL teams in the EFL cup.

Ah, yes. I believe you are correct

Looks like he played 11 Prem games there with 4 goals and an assist, according to the page I shared.

Ah, yeah, I see now that it was actually 8-3-0 in the league with him starting at LW. Not 7-3-0. My OCD had to correct it.[emoji38]

Willock is more press resistant than people give him credit for. Rarely loses the ball when tight.
