Maybe I’m wrong but we’ve had one semi serious bid for Trippier and that’s about it. We don’t have saleable assets. By all means criticise the subs today which seriously backfired but Howe has been let down too. He's not been let down, we've given him more money than we should have if anything, and ended up having to sell players just to stay on the right side of PSR. There's been laws brought in specifically to stop us making signings so I don't think you can say he's been let down. The way PSR works he's going to have to get used to selling players more readily and get used to the idea of buying unproven players with a high ceiling. When he signed: Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has revealed he signed £52million midfielder Sandro Tonali after he “fell in love” watching his play for AC Milan last season. “We pursued him for a long, long time, paid a big fee for him because I fell in love watching him play the game last year. “He’s an outstanding talent. He can do a little bit of everything. Very similar to our other midfielders, he’s got a combination of a lot of attributes that I think will suit the Premier League. On another night, the individual errors don't happen and the onus isn't suddenly put on him to tactically manoeuvre our way back into it. I can't blame him for Kelly's defending or Gordon's sitter. But the second half was a complete mess. We started very well and the general identity of the team is still in his attacking, high-pressing, play 'til we die image - and that'll bring far more good nights than bad. But I can empathise with those wondering if this is still moving in the right direction. The mitigation is of course in the fact we didn't back him in the summer. The most worrying thing is breaking the SJP illusion. We've been nigh on unbeatable here but just been made to look very ordinary by a decent-not-special team, not long after being beaten by another close rival. That's not good for him. I think there are some valid concerns with Howe but equally his players let him down tonight with piss poor passing, awful final balls and woeful finishing. Simply not good enough by too many. For example Gordon has to bury that chance ffs

He had tunnel vision in the summer over Guehi and then wanted to spunk 30 plus million on Elanga, he had the keys to the castle under PCP and fucked it up in the CL summer window, not sure Mitchell is the best DOF around time will tell, but think the notion he’s been let down is way off. I still find it incredible that we didn’t try and cash in on the likes of Almiron last summer rather than remaining loyal to limited players. Yeah but only by default. He will obviously want to hold onto his squad as it was 1. Small and 2. Performing Being loyal to limited players is part and parcel of building a culture. It’s easy to be utterly ruthless from behind the ol keyboard, but limited player Dan Burn was sorely missed tonight and Almiron has little to do with our poor performances given he doesn’t actually play. Howe was much work to do, that is clear - but he needs more help then he is getting.

The fact that Almiron isn’t good enough but almost certainly could’ve been shipped out after his purple patch in 22/23 is actually damning of Howe’s management rather than mitigating. He’s been well supported from the club management and the support so far.

Howe actually started Tonali several games last season when we had everyone fit, that's highly unusual of him. Even the first game after signing. The College Dropout Posted Monday at 22:51 Share Posted Monday at 22:51 One of the reasons I say we look a poorly coached team is that we run out of ideas visibly. I think most well coached teams keep trying what they’ve been coached to do even if it’s not working well. We play with a lot of energy and impetus. But when that faded we don’t know what to do. KaKa Posted Monday at 22:52 Share Posted Monday at 22:52 Had it mostly right at the start, and progressively moved further away from it as time went on, which was incredibly unfortunate. Very worrying as I'm now not sure if he realises how vital it is that we keep Joelinton higher up the pitch, Willock in midfield and just pick a side for Gordon and let him settle in and get into a rhythm there. Thought we were on our way and he had settled on the approach going forward, but there seemed to be more confusion today. Needs to stick with what he started with and start integrating Tonali into the first 11 so we can benefit from the added quality, especially if we can push Bruno further up, so someone can finally play Isak in behind! midds Posted Monday at 22:55 Share Posted Monday at 22:55 The future prospects of any manager are always pinned to his players and the results they get, that's just how it works. In the last few years Howe has received an unbelievable amount of praise for how he and his team have performed, he's been the manager and the team have looked good and got the results and he's been the golden boy and rightly so. I don't think you can just switch that around and give his (currently underperforming) players all of the stick and he walks away without valid criticism, you can't have it both ways. If the players and team are playing poorly but he gets no criticism but if the players and team are playing well then he gets the praise too? I love Eddie and wat him to stay and build big things here but he's not immune from criticism, no manager is. Tonight was a disaster, a total shitshow and he's the bloke in charge. People can, and have, had a pop at Isak and Gordon for their performances but if they're fair game then so is the bloke in charge. He got it wrong tonight and made it worse and worse imo. He's not infallible and he's got to take the lion's share of the responsibility
Kid Icarus Posted Monday at 22:56 Share Posted Monday at 22:56 Probably because Tonali's not really performing better than supposed worst player ever Sean Longstaff when he does play. If Longstaff's as poor as people go on, Tonali should be a shoo-in, but he's not. Not yet anyway

Why did he start Tonali most games before the ban, if he was not a Howe signing? Not even Bruno started in the first 10 games when we had an Ashley team, and Howe said it was because he was from a different league. Howe had a lot of faith in Tonali, that's why he wanted him. You're clutching at straws trying to hold on to your narrative here. Edited Monday at 22:57 by Erikse
