What have you been watching because it’s clearly not the same games I, and most others have. Describe our current identity and attacking gameplan? How are we trying to break teams down? As I have said a hundred times on here, I have made no secret of the fact I don’t think Eddie is the guy to take us to the next level. I love him as a person but I think he has already reached his ceiling and bounced off it. Am I willing him to fail? No, of course not. Like everyone, I am willing him to succeed. But do I think we need minor tweaks to go on a winning run that secures European football? again no. I think we need a whole new gameplan. Nothing we are seeing suggests we are close. Do I think Eddie is the kind of guy and manager to rip up the script and do something radically different to give us fresh impetus? No, but I seriously hope he proves me wrong, and if he does I will happily eat humble pie. As things stand, the only way I see us getting back to our best is with new signings. i respect and admire your optimism but I don’t share it. There are too many red flags starting to show. Agree with all of this

The College Dropout
Just now, Elliottman said: They haven't plated the extra 2 games yet. Still the games are coming thick and fast. if you look at Emerys record. His European success does often come at the cost of poorer league form. Villa will at least make it to the CL play offs. CL for teams like us and Villa is a myth. The PL is too competitive and we don’t have the budget to have enough quality in the squad.
KingArthur
Have to say I am bit worried about Livramento. Of course the bigger problem is the right winger, but his passing and decisions when to release and when to dribble is quite often lacking. He is getting better defensively, but comparing that with Trippier's attacking play it really is a big change. Really doesn't work at the moment no matter who is playing at right wing. And definitely there has to be a left footed player in front of him.

Nine
Livramento was never going to fill that Trippier role, he’s just not that type of full back. Hall is though.

Yea, I get that he is different type of player. But in attacking sense we are not getting the best out of him. He should be encouraged to put the ball in the box quicker, cause the 1-2s are not really his thing. His movement is just not smart enough, but he has the technique to get his foot open and cross. Like you said Hall is the player for combinations.
TRon
I feel we are overcooking the Livramento thing. He's not Trippier, but not many right backs are. If Trippier is that important to our football then just play him. Personally think the midfield and forwards need to be showing more, while full backs overlapping is a big part of football these days, we should still be able to produce down the right without relying too heavily on a defender. The last 15 games were Trippier has played above 45mins in the PL we have a record of 3-4-8. Whatever it is we are missing, it isnt Trippier in his current state. Do agree that we miss an in form Trippier though, but I doubt we will get him back.

He had an on-fire Miggy in front of him when we were at our best, and a movement-based gameplan that worked down that flank. Livra often has Longstaff just inside and bugger all of any consequence on the right wing. He's on a hiding to nothing in an attacking sense

Well both can be true, Trippier could be better for us in theory but still not playable in his current state/form.
nufcjmc
I mean if we recruited long term tino you would hope it's because some of his weaknesses can be developed or that longer term the RW picks up the creative element. Tino can still defend, receive the ball in tight spaces and get us up the pitch riding challenges and staying on his feet. Most of us love him although annoying the lack of that final cross or pass is lacking. I particularly get mad when he's in and around the opposition box he won't shoot although clearly isn't his game. He isn't going to get you the level of assist trips will but still think that element if recruited well can come from the winger instead.

Not enough depth = lack of rotation. We had more lack of depth due to injuries, but still fielded a strong starting 11 in many games. It was the fatigue (increased by the injuries) that killed us, and fatigue has a huge impact on Villa aswell. Our key players were completely out of energy from the 60th min, I'd imagine that Villa is experiencing something similar. They went all out vs Juve midweek. PauloGeordio
Live a little, throw Big Willie on. How bad can he be. Seeing him in training and vid clips the lad doesn’t lack self confidence.

AyeDubbleYoo
I don't know if it's because everyone is out of form, but I'm trying to write down the lineup I would go with and it's pretty hard to decide on one where someone isn't out of position or someone isn't really a good option for the position. Despite being completely fucked in terms of FFP (because Howe has been backed to the tune of c.£420m) the club still pursued his no.1 target past the point of reasonableness. Then we switched to an insane bid for Elanga which was thankfully rejected. Trippier’s been lost it seems due to a complete failure of professionalism. Perhaps some better management might have helped? I’ve no idea on that front, but could a different manager have produced a different outcome there? Shitload of counterfactuals and ‘what ifs’ on that score. The Trippier mess is nothing to do with Eddie, to be fair. It followed him to Spurs, to Spain and then to us. Should Howe have known before signing him? Yes, and maybe he did to be fair, but i think at £12m it was a gamble that was worth taking first and foremost and has still proven to be great value in any event. He should have been moved on last Jan though (and wanted to go) and Howe blocked that.

He was actually injured for a large part of that run in. Even Bruno didn't play until the final few games. It was just Burn and Targett who came in to play regularly during that massive winning streak after january, and our defence was just so shit before that, so Targett and Burn looked like massive upgrades. Wood came in aswell, and he also mattered due to the complete lack of options upfront. We would be nowhere near 4th the following season without Tripps, mind..
