Jacob Murphy has 11 PL goal contributions in January.

Howe deserves tremendous credit for getting the most out of the likes of Murphy and Burn. 2 players if sold, i'm not convinced go to top half PL sides, Murphy - not a PL side at all.

I thought Tonali would come good... but I didn't expect him to be this good. So again, I give him credit for getting the most out of him.

This is by far... the best central midfield pair i've seen us have. It has everything.

Best central midfield trio you mean? :)

Guarantee some will deny it, but Gillespie was pretty underappeciated until he was injured.

A lot of people didn't like 'Back pass Batty' despite him being absolutely fucking class as well.

Barton, Beresford, Shaka and Pav, Peacock?

The idea last summer was to get us ready for CL, but it didn't work that way because of all the injuries. In hindsight it's fair to argue that it might have been short sighted to buy expensive players for squad depth, but we were ofcourse very unlucky with Barnes and Tonali. With our current situation those signings doesn't look that great anymore. Maybe there was a bigger picture to be seen last summer.

Oh and I maintain that we don’t have a bunch of players that can hurt teams. Take isak out of the line up and you’ll see teams double up on Gordon and or Barnes and that’ll be that. Sad act.

Peacock's a fantastic shout actually, I remember at the time a lot of people thinking he was a donkey, a weak link etc when he really wasn't at all.

The rest I think deserved being seen as players we could upgrade on (Barton, Shaka, Pav) or I don't remember getting much criticism and being widely liked (Beresford)

Beresford was great, excellent fullback both offensively and defensively. Barton was OK, got stick at the time but it was a long time before we had a better right-back than him again if you look at the list that followed him.

Peacock took a little while to convince me but he was solid too, very dependable. Shaka was a bit of a liability though, he never gave me any confidence.

Pav was erratic, sure, and every single time he dropped his shoulder on an attacker I was convinced he was going to get caught but he never once did and nearly always left them sat on their arse as he strolled off up the pitch. Actually reckon with his footwork and shot stopping he'd be a very good keeper today.

Ah, OK, that makes more sense. Fine then, by those rules why are we not talking about Keegan's 13 consecutive wins in the Championship then?  11 of them were in the "PL era", 1992-93 season, so at least they should count?

I'll accept Keegan's record of 9 alone, or I'll accept Keegan's record of 11, or even his record of 13, but there's no grounds to say the record is 9 tied between Keegan and Benitez because if Championship games are allowed then the record is no longer 9.

Keegan’s results were league only, not consecutive matches in all competitions

I really hope all those people that doubted him remember how they feel right now the next time we lose or have a tough run. He's one of our greatest (no need to compare against Keegan etc) and deserves all the support and love from the fans.

If he fails to win anything here, I would say it's far more likely to do with outside forces then any lack of ability he has. If we can give him the tools he needs then he can take us to the levels we want to be. He's not a gate keeper (fuck off Jordan)

Could have another 10-20 years of Eddie. Some consistency that!

I for one hope he is, I also hope his career with us is parallels a certain Scots man residing in Manchester.

Trouble is some of them feel vindicated by their belief Howe has only turned it around by doing something they saw and he didn't 😂😂😂😂

I somehow hold a different view. It reallly depends on what the next tough run would be like. If that’s a carbon copy of last season then I am afraid that’s the ceiling of Howe, which we probably need to accept since we couldn’t find someone better

IIRC Eddie said "nothing happening" regarding transfers and "I want to keep all my players" -> Almiron bid accepted. He really shouldn't be trusted regarding transfers..

He’s always going to say the same thing, each window. Makes it all the more of a surprise not when there is some movement

I've got a theory about a) why he's so good and b) why he's so underestimated.

As anyone who has been in a management role will know, it's a position that demands a lot of diverse and not immediately compatible skills. Eddie doesn't seem to have a weakness. He's very clever and decisive on the technical and tactical side of the game, he's strong on detail but has his eye on the bigger picture, he can put his arm around someone's shoulder and discipline them too, he handles the people above him well, he's sure-footed on the PR side, he understands and respects people as individuals, he's cool under pressure, and to crown it, he has a capacity for hard work.

But what you see is this modest, softly-spoken character who is happy to direct the spotlight on to others. It's then easy to make the assumption that there's some more exotic character who can do 'even better'.  I don't think there is, and we're very lucky to have him.

Back in the posh school i used to go to every morning the tutor made us read out this latin poem thing about someone called Maximus who was never late, always polite, always hard working, never rushed etc etc about some mythically brilliant roman dude to somehow instill values in us (thankfully only had him one year). Some in here are reminding me of that hah.

I think he's not got the ego clouding judgement that half managers seem to have where they start blaming everyone, he stayed calmed and fixed it. I also suspect he listens to his staff and works collaboratively better than half the my way or the high way crowd.

He's only won 9 in a row.

If we really want to kick on we should be looking for managers who routinely win 10 in a row.

Was there any Murphy equivalents in that Keegan team? Ie someone people either didn't like or begrudgingly liked or were otherwise desperate for us to improve on?

Peacock unquestionably.

Used to get pelters compared to his partners in defence.  He used to bail out Howey in particular on the regular but he still bore the brunt of the criticism.

Something I don't think he gets anywhere near enough credit for, and funnily enough is actually used to crticise him when things aren't going so well, is his involvement in our recruitment. It seems to be the consensus that he's been massively involved in that side of things, and whilst I think it is important any one person doesn't have too much power, the results speak for themselves:

Hall - Class
Vlachodimos - PSR dodge
Osula - Too early to judge
Kelly - On a free, but again too early
Tonali - Class
Barnes - Injuries have hampered him to build any real momentum, but he's still got 10 goals and 4 assists from 41 appearances (1,570 minutes, so a goal or assist every 112 minutes, Gordon is every 145 minutes) impossible really for anyone to say he's been a failure with any credibility
Tino - He's a good right back playing every game, potential to be very good
Isak - Unreal
Gordon - Very, very good
Botman - Class
Targett - Can put this one down as a negative, bad injuries as well though
Pope - Excellent value for money
Ashby - Was a 3m punt, fine to go wrong
Bruno - Class
Wood - Helped keep us up and got a chunk of the fee back, easily goes into "good signing" bracket
Willock - Injuries are a big issue with him, but think again it would be extremely hard to call him a failure, we paid 25m for him, think we at least recoup decent amount of that back if not make a profit if we sell him in the Summer
Burn - Legend
Trippier - Arguably best right back we've ever had

That's really unbelievable recruitment, please keep doing what you're doing Eddie!

In fairness, Willock wasn't a Howe signing either.
