PSG have done alright since sacking Neymar & others off.

Enrique's blueprint is a good shout for us. Lots of similarities with what Howe wants from his teams, but they have the fairly massive benefit of being able to play a third XI in the league while still winning.

Yeah I almost mentioned them. Even when it was only Mbappe, the fact he was working for himself and not the team held them back despite him being a world class talent

Are you sure? Enrique would never play Burn over Hall at LB. Mendes and Hakimi are probably the most attacking full backs in the world. And he emphasise a huge lot re ball passing and retention. Players like Ugarte are dumbed because they cannot meet his technical requirement.

Enrique requires technical players to run and sacrifice for the team, but the players are allowed to do a lot of creative stuff. Howe simple wants athletes and strictly follow his order.

The Howe discourse on social media is a absolutely wild.

Reading NO, I think there's an appreciation last season's league campaign was disappointing. Most of the debate comes from whether we should stick or twist on the managerial front, and there is merit to both arguments.

Having had the misfortune of being briefly on Twitter, Blue Sky and Reddit in recent days...

Eddie and Andy Howe are poison.

We can't get a front of short sponsor because they're frightened of "Howe out" commentary.

Our best players want to leave because of Eddie Howe.

No playes want to join because of Eddie Howe.

Eddie Howe has ruined the entire project.

Don't get me wrong, I know it's an asylum out there, but fucking hell man, go outside and touch grass. Praise Vishnu I'm off social media these days.

Avoid social media like the plague, here is the only place worth discussing things.

Oof.  I don’t think any of that is true, they’re some fucking bizarre takes.

I still think that the end of the road should’ve been reached at the end of the season, but it hasn’t, so the hope has to be we recruit well and Howe and his team get back to playing well.  It feels like a line in the sand moment to me - there’s zero point in starting the season not being behind the manager.

Every debate ends up attracting a few extremists.

But I also think some people are going too far in the other direction and dismissing any criticism as madness.

You don't need to believe Howe has ruined the project, driven all the players away or scared off sponsors to conclude that a 12th-place finish after spending over £800m is nowhere near good enough.

There is a perfectly rational middle ground between "Howe is destroying the club" and "nothing to see here, give him another season".

Part of the concern is that he increasingly looks like a manager who has been figured out by almost every opponent he comes up against, and nearly every match seems to leave us with more questions than answers.

A lot of us sit squarely in that middle ground. Personally, though, I can't bring myself to look forward to next season because I simply can't see Howe turning this around. In fact, I'd be willing to bet a significant amount of money that he'll be gone before Christmas.

Usually closely followed by the predictable, always from the same sources, "but not good enough for Newcastle eh lads?" appended whenever a manager that has been vaguely linked to us gets a job at a bigger club. Mourinho and Iraola being the two current flavours of the month on that front.

Definitely don't go on Twitter or Facebook... they're essentially holding pens for the mentally dispossessed.

I find discussion on Bluesky to be quite reasonable and civil, but that may just be the NUFC fans I follow.

And Reddit has always been a bit of a niche market.

R16 in the Champions League while also getting to the Semi Final in the League cup, and R16 of the FA cup.

I'm pretty sure there was a point in the season where only Barcelona had played the same amount of games as us in Europe.

The idea that any of the none big 6 clubs that finished above us would have done that well while playing so many games against actual good quality opposition is laughable.

Other than Bradford city in the league cup every other team we played in the domestic trophies was a premier league side.

They are way over the top, that’s for sure. But I also think if we lose the first few games next season, these “over the top” bullshit will suddenly become the majority voice. Thats how critical this summer is. We are a sinking ship and this is the last chance to fix it.

He's also overperformed on our position relative to expenditure every previous season which seems to be ignored too. Horrible rat fanbase we have where everyone seems to think things will just be better every season.

We played some absolute shite in Europe, mind.   I don’t think we were drowning in games vs good quality opposition.

We were pretty poor from August though. We won 1 of our first games (an undeserved 1-0 at home to Wolves).

Barcelona x3

Benfica

Athletic Club

Marseille

Leverkusen

PSV

PSG

All those are good / top sides

Qarabag & Union SG are the only ones you could call absolute shit, but they aren't, we just completely outclassed them. They're decent sides in weaker leagues that were potential banana skins.

Qarabag beat Frankfurt, Copenhagen, Benfica and drew with Chelsea.

Union beat PSV, Galatasaray and Atalanta.

I’d argue several of those are grand old clubs with mediocre sides who’d have a good chance of being relegated in the PL.  Spurs finished 4th in the CL table

Why would you feel excited? All we've done so far is sell one of our best players for at best, a par fee.

Once we actually start making some signings which show some promise, I think that's the time to get excited.
