Wrong. Don't care whether it's selective memory or you're just outright talking crap to rewrite history, but there were loads of people on Howe's back for the 7th place finish. Just like now, Twitter and Reddit was rife with it, to the point where people were discussing how long he had left in this thread. Thanks for accidentally proving my point again 

 

It's easy enough to go back 2 years on this very thread (I've done it) and see for yourself that there wasn't "loads" of people on his back at all for the 7th place finish so yet again you're talking shite I'm afraid.

Did we? Once we got dumped out of Europe, the season was emotionally and physically over. The players weren’t going to fight for anything other than to stay fit for their potential World Cup call ups. The flip flops were truly on put on post-Barca.

Well isn't that a damning indictment of Howe and his squad if they downed tools with 2 months and 8 games of the season still to play whilst sat in 9th position. Plenty of other PL teams have more players at the World Cup than we have, including those 12 miles down the road, and didn't seem to suffer with the same lack of effort.

Plenty did tbf - it was one of the excuses made all season.  We’d be fine once the fixture congestion eased.  We actually got worse.

FWIW. I didn’t buy it as much of an excuse as some made out. But I did expect us to improve once we weren’t playing 3 games every 7-8 days. 
 

We somehow got worse and I don’t buy that it was due to a lack of professionalism. You can only really aim that at Gordon. But that could have been mutually agreed.

Let’s effectively shut it down and regroup for next season. It’s hardly downed tools or some damning indictment of Howe. If anything it’s preservation. 
 

All I personally wanted to see after the Barca series was a little tweaking of the team setup and lineups, with an eye towards next season, and we got some of that. I didn’t expect us to win a bunch of games and push for the top 6/8 (although I thought it might be possible). I knew it was the emotional end of the season post-Barca.

It might honestly just be the American in me. When there is no threat of relegation, teams across all American sports do this every season. So it doesn’t seem like some affront to my sensibilities to just take a step back for the last 20% of the season and reassess for the next one.

You’re happy with the team going through the motions, flip flops on and saving themselves for the summer? But calling it ‘downing tools’ is too far?! Either is shitty and unacceptable to me. 
 

On the second paragraph. I kind of agree. I think I even said I would rather see positive signs, changes to how we were setting up and something to build on. Perhaps more important than results even. 
 

But I don’t think we saw that bar the West Ham game and they were a disgrace defensively. 
 

So we didn’t get results and we just got more of the same. It was lose/lose. 
 

Refrained from posting in here. As I wanted to go into next season being positive and giving Howe my full backing considering he is staying. But I thought the end to the season was pretty pathetic TBH.

That would be fine if we were just always doing a Fulham or Palace (they win trophies now, mind). We still had plenty to play for looking at the league table. 
 

But we got humped off Barca and suffered another embarrassing defeat to the mackems. 
 

The response was non-existent and we got worse. Performances and results were mainly bad.

I'm happy to admit that I was one that thought we would get better once we were knocked out all of the cups, one game a week, more time on the training pitch, more time to rest between games.

 

However, in hindsight, the damage was already done in what was a tumultuous season, physically and mentally demanding, yes, there were one or two that looked to have downed tools but I think the majority was down to simple exhaustion. The Barcelona thrashing, followed by losing to the inbreds down the road was probably the final nail in the coffin, a real sucker punch. Everyone needed a break, including Howe, who I think was also stuck in a rut and paralysed by fear.

 

So long as the lessons from this season are learned, thats all we can ask for, steady improvement, it just sucks we seem to be learning lessons the hard way every time.
