DCL feels underwhelming, but he is a good age and good finisher, in particular in the air. If we can get 5 years out of him scoing 15+ a season then it would be good money. I think given our take over and wild dreams of Bruno-esque signings, it's hard to look at DCL in those big picture terms.

He is a solid PL player and would be great competition for Wilson. I guess if we are going to drop nearly £50m on anyone I am always hoping for Paqueta.

Anything close to £50m is absolutely mental. Even at £30m I think it's questionable. He's a good finisher with really good movement and he's had a couple of nice goal-scoring spells. I think with the right players around, e.g. pace, so that he can make runs through the middle he will continue to get goals. I think Howe could get a decent return out of him but I'm sure we could sign a more complete player from the continent

So he's a good finisher, good movement, two seasons of good returns in the PL (at 23/24) and you think he will continue to "get goals" with the right players around. But he isn't worth £30m? Who are you signing from the continent that is going to be less of a risk than that?

Wood has been about as useless as you could be for an attacker for the last 6 months and got nothing but love from the fans. Tripper has said it's the best experience he's had as a player, playing Infront of the SJP crowd. But aye the fans will all suddenly try and hound out the big money summer signings.

I don't think anyone is signing him for £30m as his contract is until Jun '25, as such, I think he'll go for something close to £50m. Do I think he's worth £50m? No, I don't. I'm not a scout and don't know the valuations of players on the continent that could be signed for between £30m - £50m but I know that English players and players that play for England come at a stupid premium. If he was available for £30m then I think it could be a decent signing but only if there's a lot of pace around him.

Of the two Everton strikers, I think I would get more excited at the prospect of signing Richarlison. DCL is a goalscorer, but I don't think his all round game is as good.

People would rather spend £50m on lads playing in Ligue 1 who flopped in Serie A.

And who didn’t ‘flop’ in Serie A according to our resident Milan fan, and who also is a regular Brazilian starter who has the mental strength to play abroad in two of the top leagues in his early 20’s. DCL had a mental breakdown this past season under the ‘pressure’ of the Everton fans- God help him if he ends up with us.

That's because you know (pretty much) exactly what you're going to get. They don't need 6-12 months to acclimatise to the league, they've got a proven record in the Premier League and you're paying a premium for that. It's the same reason I'd be more comfortable signing Kalvin Phillips for £40m than someone like Sangare for £30m - Sangare might turn out to be an absolute beast, but I know what Phillips can offer and I'd happily pay the extra £10m for that assurance.

In January we found we would have to deal with clubs putting "Newcastle" or "rich club" tax on top of regular fees they ask for players.

We are now also finding the stepping stone experience with agents and players using us as leverage to get the real move they want.

It's going to be a transitional stage before we can really compete. That's nothing new to anyone though. The odd gamble on us picking up a world class players due to being a fall back should the bigger club move failing to materialize is fine imo but not if we put all our eggs in that basket. Like in January those players can also just decided to stay put until January and certainly hold out for deadline day.

We are just in the friend zone until the right personality comes along like Bruno. Hopefully Ashworth and his team have that list formed.

I don’t think that playing well already in the premier league is a guarantee that it’ll transfer to a new team, especially for someone like DCL who depends a lot on the people around him

It's not a guarantee but it's a lot more likely than dropping £40m on some striker with a decent record in Germany/France/Netherlands who is much more likely to be Wout Weghorst than Ruud van Nistelrooy and that's what you're paying for.

In a situation where FFP dictates that we can't afford too many misses in the transfer market, it's not a bad strategy to pay a bit more for known quantities (hence Tripper, Targett, Burn). That's not to say we won't unearth another Bruno but I don't think that'll be the norm.

It's an undeniable factor in transfer fees and negotiations.

He was signed for 35m and was sold for 20m - he flopped.

Not a criticism of the lad. He may go on to be a Premier League or CL legend. But it's far riskier business than DCL fro the money quoted. But aye he's Brazilian, an international, an unknown entity, not known for scoring headers etc. I get it. It's exciting.

We've also identified some of that up and coming talent in the French striker and Botman.

Nah, read what the Milan fan said about the club at the time- he didn’t flop at all. Playing time determined his fee.

Personally  i think DCL is limited in general play for modern football. But most of all my gut feeling makes me feel like he’s not going upwards in his career. He’s still young but I can see him flopping, never mind the cost.

If you sell a wonderkid for less than you bought him for at the age of 22 - it's because he's flopped.

Or the club needs the money, or needs to move the player on as he doesn’t fit in with the current ethos or style. Just because he was sold for less doesn’t make him a flop man.

Lukaku doesn't suit Tuchel's style of play - he still flopped.

Frenkie De Jong is likely to sell for less than Barca bought him for. He has not been a success. It's a bit of a flop.

If a manager doesn’t pick a player because he doesn’t get on with him, or doesn’t fit his style, you can’t simply say that player has flopped. Gullit picked Robinson over Shearer. You would say Shearer flopped?

Salah flopped at Chelsea and he was barely given a chance.  Chelsea even made a profit from him. It’s still a flop. Same story for KDB at Chelsea.

Thiago Silva flopped at Porto and couldn’t get a game at Spartak Moscow in his early 20’s. It’s ok. It’s not a flaw in his ability.

Just a difference in opinion I think. If peak Messi wasn’t picked for a team because Bruce was manager and preferred Elmo instead, I’d never say he flopped personally, but I respect your opinion.
