I actually mentioned in one of my posts that I don't think he's bad defensively and has been our best defender this season. His limitations with the ball and his total lack of pace are an issue though. You are so wrong. Let it go.

TRon
9 minutes ago, Shays Given Tim Flowers said: Schar wasn’t live to the quick free kick at all. His starting position was woeful and meant he couldn’t put any pressure on Welbecks touch which wasn’t particularly great. He got caught too far from the ball to make a challenge and left plenty of space behind him for a simple ball in behind. Of all the defenders he looked the one who was caught napping, the two full backs were left trying to close the gap in the middle which meant they were always playing catch up. The Butcher
None of our defenders covered themselves in glory for the goal, but Schar, man. Schoolboy defending.
Smal
Burn is clearly instructed to play higher and try to win the ball aggressively which is why he was seemingly "out of position" (though he wasn't actually). This has always been something we've done under Howe - the two full backs are supposed to tuck in when it happens. When Trippier and Burn play they fully understand this but Tino and Hall are obviously still learning. They did tuck in eventually, but Schar didn't challenge for the ball well enough and Livramento's attempt at a challenge was really poor. They both were guilty and Dan burn should not even be near this conversation They were weak nobody is arguing that. Burn was out of position though. Your central defenders should not be 30 yards apart on a free kick situation. If any forward moves back to the half way line then we certainly have the physicality in the midfield department to deal with that. It also leaves the position of a ball being played in behind, with a player with no pace being left wide open. Holloway
we got caught napping a bit for the goal, the ball had barely stopped moving when the kick was taken. That still left 3 on 2 to deal with it and it was a weak collective effort. Burn was the least culpable in that situation imo

This is a good analysis although I must admit I'm not overly keen on someone like Burn being the guy who gets tight as he isn't very agile or good on the turn. I think you need exceptional one Vs one defenders to play this way.

Although having said that...Fab, TIno and Hall could have done better there.

Newcastle Fan Posted Sunday at 16:34 Share Posted Sunday at 16:34 His defending today was all over the place, i like him and can see what he brings to the team but we need to have Botman like quality if we are to navigate through these tough games. Counting down the days until Sven returns but he isn't fixing this. All our issues going forward and defending stem from the midfield.

Donut Posted Sunday at 16:46 Share Posted Sunday at 16:46 He´s been one of our better players this season but today he did a MasterClass Harry Maguire impression. Constantly pushing up into a CDM position only to be caught off guard and out of position due to lack of pace.
