I don’t think our staff and players ‘get it’ honestly, when it comes to playing these and the intensity of the rivalry

2nd half at home proved a lot of our modern fans don’t either.. not that the away following had the passion or vitriol of old imho

Quietest Sunderland away crowd I can ever remember at SJP until the game turned in their favour.

Odds they win Europa.

We qualify for CL.

Both get through the league stage and meet in the last 16?

I’ve got no idea where this idea that we’ll be back to being Champions League place contenders next season comes from.

The squad needs major surgery and we’re going to lose some of our best players.

In fairness I'm always critical of atmosphere but first half is as loud as I can remember at modern St James park at times and it was noon on a sunday. The players went into their shells and didn't fight, my guess if they did we'd be talking about how good it was still. There wasn't one crunching tackle from any of ours players.

I was talking to one of their players on Sunday night (not hard to guess!) and it sounds like he’s swaying towards Rangers - got a fair few options

His best form for us came alongside a genuine sitting midfielder (Evans or when Mowbray made Ekwah do it), so he could progress the ball. When he played as the holding player he did it admirably but sometimes got caught in possession.

Given the right circumstances I think he’ll do really well there.

Signing older proven players seems like a sensible way to do business in that league.

I wonder if there are similar sad sacks down south saying that it should be called St Albans Hemel Hempstead Luton London Airport

It is in Sunderland as it's still 1985 there.

Was before my time on the forum but I think @Wullie mentioned that a bunch of people on here went onto a Boro forum after they lost the UEFA Cup final pretending to be characters from The Bill

At their place after the final we had a comeback song, which I can never remember, but it rhymed four-nil and Seville with Bill.

'Geordies at home, watching the bill, turned the channel over...Seville...4-0?'. I've asked this before on the board.

No confidence at all we’ll close the gap at all.

They’ve got

- a setup that has a great talent ID track record and get deals done at sensible prices.

- a bunch of talent they can sell on for big profit, if needed.

- real characters in the team that gets them through games they’d otherwise lose.

- a fantastic defensively-minded coach that grinds them through points.

- pragmatic sense of what the team needs and when.

- an underdog spirit.

They will be able to attract a good calibre of player with European football and their networking.

They always said they have done it the right way.

Food for thought

Not sure 1 transfer window, while being decent, constitutes being described as a good track record. The grinding out points while being canny defensive only gets you so far. Teams like that get found out. It'll be much harder for them next season and I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest to see them struggle. Xhaka a year older too.  Fuck the cunts to hell and back.

Just got to suck it up and take our medicine unfortunately and accept that we rolled over and let them tickle our bellies twice to hand them 6 easy points to help them along their way.

Since the ownership change our recruitment has been broadly very good. It’s not just the one transfer window.

Le Bris and the recruitment team were getting a lot of stick on RTG pretty much up to Ballard's winner v Coventry.

Not the first time we've witnessed Makem revisionism, tbf.

It's a football fan thing anyway but they're, definitely, bipolar.

Not that I pay them too much attention BUT were they not absolutely shit until they sussed out Speakman (?) wasn't all that??

Fwiw I've got a lot of respect for Reggie and the Gang.

Obviously it's a shame it's them but promoted clubs giving it a go is good for the league. I also think they'll be fine next year.
