Aye they've had more seasons in Division 3 than they've had top half top flight finishes in the last 70 years. Played 2 European ties in their entire history and haven't won a trophy other than a Pizza Cup for over half a Century. Aren't even in the top 10 in the all time attendance table and their crowds are typically what they'd try to use as their comeback. It's easy for them to crow about being able to beat PSG like they were saying 2 years ago, or being able to beat Benfica like they're saying now in the Champions League, safe in the knowledge that ridiculous theory will never, ever be put to the test, because they'll never, ever be good enough to go up against those teams. I agree with the mackems to a certain extent, they probably would beat the likes of Kairat, Pafos, USG, Slavia, Qarabag and they'd no doubt give the likes of Benfica, Olympiakos, Brugge a game. I also think every other premier league club could claim the same and the mackems would do well to remember that the only reason they have the resources to beat teams like that is a by product of playing in the richest league in the world and to qualify for such tournaments they'll have to prove their quality for a bit more than 8 games against predominantly shit teams. The latest 2-1, top dog, wins in a row thing that has 'broken us' yet completely didnt effect when it was done to them, just prior, in a much better way. Being a few divisions ahead of them for several years was no sweat but were broken, whilst playing Champions League football, by them being a few places/points ahead at the start of a season. Its make sense if they were suggesting as the poor relations its embarrassing for us to cede anything to them but just business as usual the other way, but that wont be the thought process. The thing is though at this level the other team will always have chances, despite you being the better team or not. PSG had chances against us when we thrashed them 4-1, USG had chances against us, and yes Benfica had some chances against us. Olympiacos had plenty of chances against Barcelona last night, and lost 6-1. The reason why it was a shock that PSG won with such a big margin and so convincing against Inter in the final is that at this level it’s so unusual to do so. The same applies at Premier League level, rarely dos a game go by where the opposition don’t have chances. I guess when you have spent 8 years watching League One and Championship football where it is a case of not being the totally gash team and you’ll win, it’s hard to process that. Fo what it’s worth, I thought we were convincingly the better team and full deserved our lead, and the Benfica manager who is regarded as one of the best managers in modern football even said this in his post match press conference.
