Tiresias
They invest properly and sensibly they could do ok. They may have that old problem of attracting talent to the north east if they can't afford silly wages but all this can be overcome with smart investment singings and management. There is probably a roof to what can be achieved mind otherwise if they came up most likely it would be a Norwich. DIdn't they gut their academy which was by far their best asset? BUT If they ever did (again, seriously) what would be the very best they could do? Rapid relegation, perhaps an 'occasional' yo-yo club. ALL at the same time as we are . . . . . Anyone can get out of that division - sometimes the difference between lower mid table and the playoffs is a short burst of form at the end of the season. Loads of playoff winners finished 6th after a really late run of five or six wins in roughly the same number of games. No argument re the second part of what you said though - that’s all they can hope for. Ever.

I can say from a number of conversations that some of them genuinely believe these 10k seats were free tickets for life. Some of them told me they know people who now have a free ticket to watch "the Mags" for life..... brain dead the lot of them, lies repeated enough times become facts! They also only got 2 games or so out of it as well because of the pandemic.

Wolfcastle
And not sure of the merits of seeing Kevin Ball smash into Gazza, John Kay into Ginola, Quinn lumbering around elbows and dives with Woodgate and an ancient Chris Waddle shuffling around like the waiter on Twin Peaks up against his former youthful self. Their love of ‘Quinny’ is my favourite. The embodiment of the mediocre ‘big man up front’ trope, well past his (limited) prime when he rocked up to the SOS. His ability to head down long balls granted him legendary status. It’s genuinely hard to imagine a 30-odd year old Quinn making our top 40 forwards in my lifetime had he signed for us (unlikely, given that he’d have had to get past Shearer, Ferdinand, Asprilla, Beardsley, Kitson and Huckerby when he signed for the Mackems). To be fair he doesn't say he's any good, just had more of a positive influence. Given that John O'shea was instrumental in fleecing them and Cattermoles thing was to set out to intentionally injure. O'nien being a fairly inoffensive championship/league 1 clogger then aye, he's probably had a more positive influence.
