Or he played a blinder and just made Ashworth the bad guy.  Either way, it was the correct decision.

That was the impression I got from the story. Even from Shelvey's telling it's evident that Eddie had fuck all interest in keeping him and just didn't want to be the one to say it.

This is exactly it and paints a really interesting picture of the dynamics at the club at that time imo.

He basically admitted he was quite happy to doss around for a year - wasn't bothered about playing just wanted same wages so he could stay at home
