If it's people that have just bought tickets to collect the LP with no intention of going their bang to rights.

Wonder where the club stands legally if person who bought ticket and has been sent this letter, then claims as their alibi that they couldn’t make it to the game

Can’t think of any other sports / entertainment events where someone can be punished for buying a ticket then not turning up

Ditto unfortunately. Would’ve been interesting to be part of the conversation.

I’d say it’s clearly only those that tried the ticket at the turnstile.

Given the ‘punishment’ is in the form of having loyalty points removed, I doubt anyone could legally challenge that as I’m sure the club would just be able to say awarding them (or not) is entirely at their discretion.

While it is absolutely shocking to buy only for the point and simply not attend, I'm not sure how the club could possibly prove that was the case or be justified in enforcing on those terms. There is simply no way to prove it unless the purchaser willingly says that was what they did.

I've missed games personally in the past because I was ill on the morning (Wolves away 2017) and because of flooding on train tracks (Wolves away 2020). The universe obviously trying to prevent me going to Molineux (I should have listened). These are common circumstances, among many others, which would prevent attendance on the day. Any rightful purchaser (taking the strict terms under which they're now operating) of a ticket should hold the right to ultimately not attend for whatever reason. This is particularly the case now as there is almost no window whatsoever these days to return a ticket between its delivery and the cut off point for official returns.

Under questioning of non attendance it would be perfectly reasonable for them to have the single loyalty point deducted for the game they didn't go to - but not any punishment above and beyond that.

Even in instances where a dud ticket was scanned but replacement not collected (I don't know if they're able to corroborate these two elements) I'd say it is not reasonable to punish in such a manner. There are perfectly legitimate reasons why certain individuals would not feel comfortable going around to an away box office on their own. Certainly they should be able to choose not to do so if they wish. Similarly if they've got there and realised they don't have their ID on them as it is back at home/on bus/in car - or they don't have one whatsoever.

The only circumstances where I could see the club being justified in full points deductions under this system (accepting the reality of this system) is in a case where somebody who has purchased a resale willingly goes up to the box office and admits this is the case and they aren't the rightful owner of the ticket.

To be honest if they're sending out emails to people giving them only 3 days to appeal purely for non collection of the ticket on the day that is actually pretty shocking.

I regularly go days/weeks without checking my personal email if there's not something I'm specifically waiting on or sending. [emoji38]

If you genuinely want to go to the match and your ticket isn’t working then you are going to go to the box office for assistance to get it sorted after travelling all that way. Accompanied or not. Rewind back to last season if your ticket didn’t work you wouldn’t just shrug your shoulders and head home. You’d seek assistance and be lead or shown to the box office.

In 99% of cases I'd say yes, you would do, I certainly would do. But I'd also say if you genuinely don't feel comfortable in doing so you should be allowed not to without risk of punishment. Similarly if you've arrived and don't have any ID on you for whatever reason (and you know they're going to ask for it) then it should be OK to not bother trying without being punished.

I know what you're saying and the practical realities for most people in most cases. I just can't believe it can be justifiable for the club to do a points deduction unless it is absolutely without doubt clear somebody else is using the ticket.

I do wonder what the club’s long term aim with this strategy is here?

To me, I’m not sure it’s a sustainable policy. It feels like it’s probably a right pain in the arse for the Box Office to be doing this near enough every game. But unless they come up with something better/different, it’ll sharp go back to the ticket selling on they were trying to prevent if they decide to stop.

I think the unsustainability of keeping it up probably explains why they're going in hard with it early on and dishing out the punishments (or at least making the direct threats), to lay down a marker. They'll also probably continue to advertise that it's going to happen even if it doesn't. Just checked back and the publicity on official website for West Ham before the game still mentions the ID checks happening throughout the season - but apparently according to .com they never happened.

Yeah, I think unofficially they’d probably be quite happy to turn a blind eye to selling on if the numbers involved were small enough to not be making a material difference to the points games were selling out on.

They’re probably hoping that now they’ve done that, they can quietly step away from doing the checks at some point. We’ll see.

If you ain’t comfortable in going to a box office to sort your ticket out knowing you’ve nothing to hide I’d suggest that attending away games isn’t for you.

The fact that you’d of had to of attended many away games previously to be in a position in the first place to have any points removal repercussions would also suggest you’d have no issues navigating a trip to the box office.

There really is no excuse to avoid it unless you’ve something to hide.

If you are angling this 1% is because of fear of being attacked (?) you could just head there a minute after KO when all the home fans are inside the ground. Ideal? No but again after making a long trip you’d still sacrifice opening 5mins of game if you are the genuine ticket holder than not attend at all. Reality anyway is you’d be offered an escort to the box office if the policing of this is coordinated with the hosts.

Another tale of someone losing loyalty points in this thread, seems like no warnings just removal of points straight away.

If it’s as he describes in the thread, I would suspect he shouldn’t have an issue getting them reinstated.

Seems unnecessarily heavy-handed from the club though. Perhaps wanting to get the word out that they genuinely are taking points away…

I agree. If true. Does have a hint of “doth protest too much!”

Email the club. Wait for income and if not sorted make it public. People are right Fannie’s at times ?

Yeah, if they gave him the replacement ticket, it does seem odd if they’ve removed the points anyway?

Who knows ??‍♂️ but I reckon the box office won’t mind a story or two like this coming out as it probably increases the deterrent factor, which is what they’re after.

There’s definitely a narrative battle going on over this on social media from both sides of the fence.
