We just spent close to 200m in transfer fees (pre-Isak sale) and probably increased our wage bill by a lot. The club’s revenue hasn’t suddenly doubled. We were likely going to have to sell one of our best players at some point to fund continued spending and if we were, it might as well be the idiot who doesn’t want to be here. We weren’t competing with bigger clubs for those signings - and even with Tonali, there wasn’t anyone else in for him, and I still have my suspicions that Milan let him go simply because they had an inkling of what was coming. They were all coups. Isak had been linked heavily to Arsenal 6 months prior. The shit season put everyone off but Isak is a long time wonderkid. He cost £60m after a bad season for a reason. Tino and Hall - we all thought we had signed future England fullbacks and that has turned out to be the case. Man U did a transfer review and said ‘why did we let Tino Livramento go to Newcastle?’ Similar with Hall. I do agree that we paid a premium for all of them. Botman, Trippier, Bruno all coups. All of these players heavily linked to clubs at a higher level or earmarked for international football. Like Dibling is a coup for Everton. Elanga, Thiaw, Ramsdale, Ramsey (injuries), not the same level of regard in the game. Larsen, Wissa - these are all Nick Pope level signings but on a massive fee. Nick W granted, emerged as a top talent in 2025. If Amanda was here we would’ve landed Guehi imo. Thats the calibre of player we were signing when she was around. Nobody else was after him then either, 12 months later he’s off to Liverpool.

Vinny Green Balls
It's an answer since we have no goals at the moment. And it's only an answer because the club put itself into a position where it has to do something like that. These last two summers have been bad miscalculations to put it nicely. The £200M can be spread over ~5 years, so really comes out to about £40M for the year. Isak's sale, on the other hand, can be recognised 100% up front (minus whatever amortisation is remaining from buying him). That's my understanding anyway, happy to be corrected. It feels like there has been an air of inevitably about this ever since he announced his desire to explore a move. Is it because we did promise him something, or because we do have PSR concerns at least now having spent money on Thiaw, Ramsey and Woltemade? Did we think we might eke another season out of him only for the relationship to irrevocably sour? I think because the owners have the best interests of NUFC in mind. There’s no emotion towards Liverpool (that is the true ‘fuck you’ to them - when you really don’t care about them). The importance is for our team and having that shit moping about in the background would seriously hit moral (he was never coming back to play well after what he said). 125 million ‘in the bank’ and a new forward and the project remains on track. With the rat around it likely wouldn’t have been.
Stottie
fwiw, Isak will likely now be on near 300k plus bonuses. Liverpool's wage bill, in their accounts, is about 450M. Yes they have more merch and PR people and commercial operations people than us in their organization, but their first team squad is no bigger and will likely be on 50% per player more. It won't be "just one or two special ones" as their fans claim.

I was convinced we wouldn't sell - I mean why would we - no PSR issues and the Saudis have ambitions for us to be No 1.
