Looks like it's going to go at least 17 years since we last played the Berra.

Must be at the point neither set of fans thinks we have a rivallry now instead of just us.

I still remember their shite patter “Geordie’s at home watching The Bill” or whatever it was when they fluked that Euro run.

Bad enough having the Mackems in the same league, never mind these ghouls.

And the “trophy virgins” shite despite us having won 11.

My favourite Smoggies are the ones who go on about how they’re all from Yorkshire, and their real rivals are Leeds

Face facts lads - it’s Hartlepool

I’m from Hartlepool, I take offence at your suggestion

Southampton spying was definitely wrong but no way should they be kicked out. Boro had a chance to beat them and failed to do so, you can't then go back and reward them with a place in the final when they haven't been good enough to qualify for it.

At least that lad who was probably a mackem trying to get bites won't be back in the mackem thread banging on about how the beasts is our real derby and how much he's looking forward to playing them

To be honest, I vaguely remember the original 'spygate' involving Leeds, but didn't realise there was now an actual EFL rule that you cant observe an opponents training within 72hrs of a match.

I agree Southampton shouldn't lose their playoff place because of it. But it's one of them, the rule appears to have been broken, but Burra just using it as a potential route to the final, when they were still unable to beat Southampton over 2 legs + ET tells it all, really.

Leeds got a £200k fine under Bielsa. They’ll double it for Southampton who’ll laugh it off as they bank £200m for PL participation and parachute payments.

Wouldn’t the flip side be that they only lost to Southampton in the last five minutes of 2 legs and ET, so any advantage Southampton might have gained by spying could have actually tipped the balance?

It's still cheating whatever way it worked out for them. Hate that.

The way Southampton carried on last night at times it was like collective delayed PTSD from Murphy waving that lad off in the semi-final that time kicked in and they finally decided they were going to bite back

If it's proved to have been a regular thing and not just a one-off. I think they should be given more than a fine like.

This is the only occasion we know of because they've been caught

What if they've been doing it all season which has aided them getting a playoff place in the first place?

It’s the stupidest rule in the history of football.  Teams used to train in public - what exactly are they really going to learn about the opposition that they didn’t know already?  Storm in a teacup.

Eddie never said he threw the away PL fixture at Liverpool last season, but he did allude to deliberately saving certain tactics for the cup final in an effort to wrongfoot Slot. If Liverpool spied our preparation for Wembley, the result might have been very different. That's how I'm looking at it. Strict punishment is needed.

They felt they'd learn enough as to spy on them.

That’s true, but it just sounds like high farce.  They’re not the SAS planning a raid - I’d love to know if the Smoggies did something so radical in that match that only hiding under a hedge like a porn stash would suffice.  Like they were playing a 6-1-3 formation or they were playing their keeper on the left wing.  I’m willing to bet Boro lined up and played in the way anyone mildly observant could’ve predicted.

Tend to agree. If the penalty is just a fine then I guess you almost have to try and spy on your opponent when the prize of winning is many times higher.

It could've been something as simple as watching them drill penalties. There can't be that much data on where the 4th or 5th penalty taker puts their pens.

Not much to see this season.

Steve Bruce: Can’t spy on our training sessions if you give me the lads the days off from training.
