Anthony Gordon (now playing for FC Barcelona)

Recommended Posts

I was surprised to see him returned to left-wing at the weekend. Assumed he'd keep the striker role after doing a good job there on the whole.

I've always liked Gordon but I do wonder if he's reaching a natural end to his time here. Firstly, there's our need to sell and he's a candidate for that because we'd get a good fee. But in terms of his own NUFC career; he's inconsistent and - where previously he was clearly a LW who could cover CF - I think it's now unclear where he's best deployed. That's not ideal for anyone really.

There's also the fact that the fanbase feels generally a bit cold on him. He's often a bit of a lightning rod and seems to get people's backs up for a variety of reasons. He'll know this and it'll accelerate his own decision to move if a tempting offer came along.

Tbh I was quite prepared for him to be our starting striker for the foreseeable, potentially even into next season. He does have potential there imo, and it could save us a job in the summer. But if we still see him as a LW first and foremost, I think I could live with him being the sacrificial lamb, hopefully giving us the leverage to retain Tonali or - heaven forbid - Bruno. Especially if it's abroad. I'd hate to see any of Howe's boys tearing it up for someone else in the PL.

They paid €75 million for Diaz an older player so that's got to be the minimum we accept

Diaz is the better player, though. Diaz performed immediately and is a real asset for Bayern. Above all, he consistently delivers good performances. Diaz is having a great season, and the transfer fee has already paid off. Gordon can't match Diaz's performance.

I'm sure they paid €100m for Kane. I know he's class but was about 30 when they signed him. Cheeky fuckers!

With the fantastic performances Kane has delivered at Bayern Munich, he has long since recouped his transfer fee. For me, Kane is one of the best strikers of all time.

Nah. He only recoups it they win the champions league. They don't need Kane to win the domestic league.

Diaz’s output in three of his four seasons at Liverpool is comparable to Gordon.  Gordon would absolutely tear up the Bundesliga - most of it is poor.

That's true. But he's already recouped his investment through his status as a fan favorite. He was definitely worth the 100 million.

Look at Isak, he's young, but so far he's been a complete flop at the Reds. Even with the injury. The guy's just bad.

I only saw his games with Bayern and they were great. Even in the Champions League. I think Diaz gives much more to his team than Gordon. Sure, Gordon has brilliant moments too, but Diaz plays much more for the team, in my opinion.

Perhaps, but Gordon’s goal record in the CL isn’t exactly shabby, and reflective of the poor quality of most of the teams in the competition

Yes, that's right. For me, the best teams right now are PSG and Bayern.

Arsenal played a great group stage, but their form is trending downwards. You can see that in the Premier League too. I now believe that Manchester City will even win the title.

I want us to keep Gordon

But I wonder if the Ekitike injury will mean Liverpool join Bayern at the table

9 months out and supposedly worse than an ACL to recover from, and next season they only have Isak, Gapko and that young lad fit...

I'd want a higher fee than Liverpool paid for Ekitike. Gordon is proven in a better league and the Champions League.

I too was surprised Gordon was not retained as a striker against Palace. We could have played Osula RW.

It's a big summer for Anthony Gordon. For the time being, the Newcastle attacker's focus will be fixed on trying to help his club out of their meandering form.

But there is also a looming World Cup, in which the winger hopes to play a major part for England.

Meanwhile, Gordon's future is set to be one of the most prevalent narratives of the summer transfer window.

A move to Germany is in the pipeline for the former Everton forward, with Bayern Munich seriously interest in the 25-year-old.

Footballers are conditioned not to peek too far ahead but you could understand if Gordon had at least half an eye on what's next.

Here, BBC Sport examines his role in Thomas Tuchel's plans heading into the World Cup and how his club future is shaping up.

Newcastle 'will consider offers for Gordon'

It is understood that Gordon is one of a number players Newcastle will listen to offers for at the end of the season.

As outlined by BBC Sport last week, the club will need to sell at least one of their crown jewels in order to give head coach Eddie Howe funds to strengthen his squad if they miss out on European football.

Gordon is one of five players - along with Tino Livramento, Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Lewis Hall - who would probably command the highest transfer fee.

Sensing an opportunity, it is understood Bayern have accelerated their interest in Gordon in recent weeks.

Well-placed sources indicate the player is aware that the Bundesliga champions admire his abilities. And as things stand, he is understood to be open to considering a move to Germany.

Bayern are an attractive proposition. They pay well and offer a near-cast iron guarantee of competing for major trophies every season. And they would provide the chance for Gordon to team up at club level with England captain Harry Kane.

But as Luis Diaz appears to have the left-wing role locked in at Bayern, it would be interesting to see how regularly Gordon would play at the Allianz Arena.

And while sources are indicating that a move to Germany has a good chance of happening in the coming months, there are obvious obstacles that need to be cleared – namely the transfer fee.

Newcastle are in a relatively strong position to command a minimum of £70m for Gordon this summer.

They signed him from Everton for £45m three years ago, although the following season he was offered to Liverpool by Newcastle.

He still has four years on his contract, so Newcastle have leverage - though finances are tight at St James' Park because of profit and sustainability rules, and Bayern will know that.

All that said, Bayern are unlikely to be the only club at the table for Gordon.

Arsenal have a long-term interest and considered making an offer in the summer of 2024.

It is understood the Gunners' interest still stands, and that they are in the market for a left-winger again this summer.

The level of Arsenal's interest in Gordon will depend on the price, with the Premier League leaders set to take a more balanced approach to the summer window while they have other targets too.

So we need a new GK and RW.

In the media:

Hall is being linked with a whole host of clubs

Livramento is going to Man City

Tonali is going to another PL team

Bruno is going to Man Utd

We're cashing in on Joelinton as he's getting on in age

Gordon is going to Bayern Munich

Woltemade is going back to Germany

On top of that Schar is going to need replacing and Botman was going to Liverpool until he signed a new contract.

If you listened to the media and believed half their shite we'd be needing a completely new starting 11 next season.

With an astute transfer team/strategy in place capable of replacing players and improving the squad, I'd be quite happy selling Gordon.

In other words, I would not sell Gordon.

Probably signing a new deal then.

Now come the coordinated attempts to drive the price down. Remind you of anything?

See you later Gordon, thanks for some intermittent quality and some great performances in 22/23. Look forward to having a more technically gifted player on the left who is a more natural finisher

Honestly, sell Gordon, Livramento, and Tonali. If they don’t want to be here, they can fuck off. It’s not like they are performing this season anyway.

100% agree
