  1. 1. Would you want a large singing/standing section at St James' Park?

    • Yes. I'm an existing season ticket holder and I would want to be a part of it

    • Yes. I'm an existing season ticket holder but wouldn't want to be part of it, but I would move to a seat somewhere else if the singing section was to be where I currently sit....as long as I was happy with the new seat.

    • No. The atmosphere is fine as it is.

    • No. The atmosphere needs to improve but this isn't the answer.

    • Yes. I'm just a member at the moment but would want one in the singing section.

    • Yes. I'm just a member at the moment but would want a season ticket in a non-singing section. But a singing section needs to happen to let people who want to sing be together

What was the atmosphere like yesterday then? It sounded pretty good on the TV highlights, and obviously the red card incident stoked everything up, but did the ability for people to chose their own seats again make a difference?

it was rocking pre-match, but fell a bit flat during the game. as always it's totally reflective of what is happening on the pitch, and Southampton were really good. I think most people were expecting us to blow them away with an early goal or two.

I thought it was pretty good. Not loads of singing but lots of shouting both encouragement and abuse.  Good celebrations for the goal too given what had come before. Definitely not at all like some of the dead passive games I was at last season.

Amazing how much negativity I see about the atmosphere yet pundits and those generally from outside of Newcastle continually say it’s one of the best stadiums/atmospheres in the league 🤷🏻‍♂️

have to say, I’ve been quite a lot over the last two years via the ballot and I can’t remember thinking the atmosphere was particularly shit on many occasions.

I think we have unrealistic expectations TBH. I can't remember a time when the atmosphere was consistently amazing, it depends on the wider situation. and what's happening in the game.

I couldn't get a ticket regularly in the peak 1990s times, maybe that was better. But I can definitely remember, for example, the crowd doing a lot of groaning and being quite difficult for the home players during the bad times.

It's the same with Liverpool , they say the atmosphere is shite yet all you ever hear about is the famous anfield atmosphere from neutrals . In fact I would wager every season ticket holder at every club in the league would say the atmosphere needs improving so it's not just us.

Be the same ones who say every newcastle fan loves a number 9

Just an easy cliché for them to spit out

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it would make a bit of difference if you could find a way to have the away supporters closer to the pitch.

The excuses on the Mag article:

*Ticket prices too high

* Season ticket holders selling tickets to their mates

*Tourists who never been...

Rest my case

just needs the like minded singing types together in four parts of the ground.

some people have been fans for years and dont want to sing.

so what.

especially if no one else is singing around them.

we're just to the left of the strawberry corner so its easier for us to join in the singing.

Two examples I can give you why they would say that. Sheff Utd away before any of the eight goals the home fans didn’t even murmur in any sort of reaction and as the game got worse just quiet acceptance. Same against Forest in the Cup this season. Complete lack of standing up and berating the officials or players. Just sat quietly for the most part.

At least with games like last night there are still audible ooo’s and rrrr’s from time to time and shouts from the crowd for corners won etc.

An almost carbon copy of the discussion in this thread.

My first experience of the Anfield atmosphere was in 93/94 when the Kop was still a terrace. Going there as a 16 year old kid I was totally underwhelmed by it. The world famous Kop never sang, the rest of the ground sat in silence. I remember thinking how much better our home crowd was. Anfield was rubbish.

I also visited Villa Park that season to witness our first ever away win in the Premier League. The Holte End was also still terracing and it absolutely pissed all over the Anfield Kop. Also looked far bigger and more intimidating.

A lot of it is clichéd nonsense. Anfield has never has a great atmosphere. You'd go to places like Upton Park, Maine Road, Elland Road, Filbert Street etc and they were far more vociferous and intimidating yet they never got the same acclaim Anfield did.

I just think today's crowd aren't as invested in the game as they were years ago. Back then you'd hold a piss in cos you didn't want to miss owt but if you were desperate you'd go as quickly as you could and get straight back up again, desperate lly hoping you'd not misssd anything. Nowadays people start drifting down for a piss and a pint from 30 mins onwards and stay there till after the 2nd half has started. That never used to happen. A lot more people leave well before the end these days as well.

One thing that struck my last night was a good 10k people had left well before the final whistle when a goal for Wimbledon would have taken the game to penalties but they clearly weren't arsed about missing it. Again, in times gone by not a single person would have upped and left whilst there was the chance of a penalty shoot out.

Different times, different people, different mentality. I definitely think the supporters were more committed to the cause back then.

Im not sure I follow? Why are those games relevant to SJP? Unless I’m missing your point?

Yet I’ve been to Anfield the last two years against us and and overall the atmosphere has been excellent. Not the whole game, it has ups and downs, but there’s parts where it was fantastic. The Kop end in particular tried to keep an atmosphere the whole game.

Are ‘we’ becoming a bunch of wingy fuckers who expect nothing less than non stop noise start to finish or is the reality a lot of people watching on tv and making their minds up and not actually going to games???

Just go to the game, sing, chant what you want

People next to you will either join in or they won't.

Then people next to them will do the same.

Then all of a sudden you have a corner, a stand , a stadium joining in.

Simple really

in many areas of the stadium, if you decide to sing and chant then the people next to you will tell you to pipe down and shut the fuck up because they've been sat in those seats for 25 years and you haven't

Radge packets at pitch level and the posh nobs above, then the corporate & royalty at the top.
