I don't think you can understate how much VAR has changed the feel of premier league games as well. Time was, all you had to do was make sure you weren't the only one bouncing around like a loon in a silent Gallowgate with everyone else looking at the raised offside flag. All the traditional stuff that fans used to make a noise about is now up for debate. The game has changed and the fans that are going have changed. I honestly don't think it's any more complicated than that; epic atmospheres can still exist but are the result of exceptional circumstances rather than the rule now. At lower league games where it's cheap and easy to get in and the goals and blood and thunder challenges are decided on then and there, you still get some of that old atmosphere given enough spectators and a bar, I think. Outside of a few "Hello, hello, we are the Geordie boys" chants it was an absolutely cack experience. I heard this from my left and assumed it was a witty retort from their fans after us singing about empty seats. Couldn't believe my fucking eyes when I turned and saw it was our fans actually singing it. The lowest point of a particularly grim afternoon. I would honestly take that at the minute as I'd rather that than long periods of silence again. Baby steps, and getting people singing anything (and not at a speed that sounds ike they're amphetamined up to their eyeballs) would be a start. Suppose the performance wouldn't have helped but in days gone by that wouldn't have mattered. 100% right. I remember being at Goodison, Easter 87, they were basically crowned champions that day (Liverpool lost at Man Utd same day) and twatted us 3 nowt. Didn't matter, the Toon fans made it a point of pride that even though we got scudded on the pitch, we were not going to be second best off it. One of the best away atmospheres i've ever been a part of, out-sang 45k Everton fans and it came in a rotten defeat. Different days.

NUFC91 Posted Sunday at 18:06 Share Posted Sunday at 18:06 (edited) You notice the difference in attendees v how away end going to be, Brentford this season was alot more old lads less Newcastle tops (not that I'm saying you shouldn't wear strip) more on a Xmas day out and away end was great. Think back to championship was a lot of younger fans who propped up away ends who now are often ticketless, I do think the songbook was far better too then. geordiesteve710 Posted Sunday at 18:24 Share Posted Sunday at 18:24 I'm going to get pelters for saying it but the atmosphere is notably worse the more lasses are in the crowd. To clarify, I do know some lasses in the hard-core fanbase who know and sing all the songs. I'm not saying that lasses are inherently shit fans. It's maybe more the dynamic that when there's more lasses in attendance it means there's more people have come as a couple and people are less likely to be rowdy in front of their lass? I feel for the young modern fan in a lot of ways, not getting to experience that and only knowing mostly sterile atmospheres and stupid prices. Even though we were largely shit on the pitch, I still treasure the memories of following them in the 80s and being part of large standing crowds. It wasn't always particularly safe (Spurs in the cup in 87 stands out, 15k away fans) but it was unforgettable.
Whitley mag Posted Sunday at 19:35 Share Posted Sunday at 19:35 Best away support I’ve ever been part of was Derby away at Easter under Keegan when it looked like we were heading for relegation, relentless support that day which made the hairs stand up. Fair, it was definitely edgier. Maybe 92/93 was my favorite year in general, away games that year were fantastic and it was still cheap pre-PL. Danh1 Posted Monday at 00:00 Share Posted Monday at 00:00 Sadly you can’t expect the fanbase that can’t even get the “UNITED” chant right or sing the correct words to our anthem to come up with something decent or original.

That's where I always place it. With the Gallowgate of all things, because the year before with the new Leazes and the exact same stand as the jumpingest part even with a reduced Gallowgate and the year before that with two gaping open ends the atmosphere was great. As someone above has mentioned Derby in 92, I was at the same fixture early on the next season, saw next to nothing (put in a paddock by then) and loved every bit of it. Fans since cant understand that because its completely changed, was never really about the entertainment as a spectacle but the occasion. A bit of the hairyness and rivallry going probably hasn't helped, felt like total enemies and personal for 90minutes, even somewhere like Derby or at home to Wolves, feels more like bants since.
