I thought Hall played well.  The others were ok.

Hall did play pretty well. Tonali does clever things effortlessly it seems. He carries the ball pretty well in the midfield. He's just a very efficient footballer when he's on the pitch and I think he adds alot and should be featured.

Agreed - though the problem became apparent as Bruno was really poor.

I’m absolutely puzzled as to why we’ve got both of them at this point

I don't think there's any reason they can't play together, even with Bruno as the deepest. Just needs work, they're both intelligent and high-quality players.

I actually think the solution longer-term could be a third midfielder to start with them, either RCM or LCM depending on where Tonali ends up playing. I'd even consider Tonali-Bruno-Miley TBH.

I’d definitely stick with Tonali in the deeper role and Bruno pushed further forward (Bruno is badly out of form, I’m sure he can play there).  Not sure re Miley - he looked a long way from the finished article last season (he is a kid of course - plenty of time yet).  It would be Bruno-Tonali-Willock for me if we stick to 4-3-3

I would tend to agree although I freely admit many of you lads have forgotten more football knowledge than I ever had. Bruno was invisible today. Why can't two very good internationals function together in the midfield? I hate to say it but my first thought is tactics and game plan. Either that or Bruno has a problem which means Newcastle have a problem as they made him captain.

Several possibilities. Get Brunos replacement in before his clause gets triggered ? Bring in a great player to improve the team (but have to wait a year to do it) ?

Brilliant performance. Pretty much the only player to come out with any credit. Hall was good for most of the game. But some of his defending was criminal.

I guess Tino was solid enough and Barnes was ok on the right. Proper straw clutching here, mind.

Cunha as a 10 would be perfect for Tonali and Bruno.  Often plays first time, loves left channel, and is a ball carrier who has an eye for pass and goal.

Was a breath of fresh air to see CM track back, recover, and break up a counter. Tonali did it on several occasions. He has to stay in the team moving forward.

Get Bruno more involved further up the pitch

I wonder if it's a problem of wavelength? Tonali is a quick give and go type, Bruno seems to be more of a stick and hold.  So basically if Tonali gives it to him and goes, he's not necessarily getting the ball back until Bruno's had a couple of touches by which time Tonali has probably sat back on his heels.

I think we need to move to two “6’s” and a 10.

               Tonali.      Bruno

 Murphy.        Gordon.       Barnes

                         Isak

Gordon has done nothing to show that he is capable of playing as a 10.  He is limited technically and his passing is pretty bad IMO.  I don't think we have a 10 in our squad.  The only one who could possibly do it from a technical standpoint is Bruno.  But he isn't particularly mobile to put it politely and I think with the players we have.  Our build up is reliant on him moving the ball further up the pitch and getting on it a bit deeper.  I think the game would pass him by playing there and we wouldn't find him anywhere near enough.

Murphy back in would be a step backwards.  He isn't good enough to be starting for a Premier League team who wants to be top half/in Europe.

Is Willock an option? He has that burst of pace and acceleration that could get him into the box but he lacks guile and end product.
Barnes is another option since he at least has composure in the final third and can shoot with both feet. Clutching at straws a bit though.
I think Gordon has to play on the left. It where he has been most effective for us and his form has dropped off since we started moving him around.

Gordon       Barnes.       Murphy?

           Tonali.          Bruno

Harsh on Joelinton, and I'd prefer we didn't have to play Murphy but that's what happens when you don't sign a decent RW for 3+ years

Maybe we play that at home and something more conservative away (it'll never happen but i'm bored as fuck so why not)

                    Isak

Gordon                          Murphy?

           Tonali         Bruno

                  Joelinton

For now Miggy is possibly the best option, albeit might be sold in Jan.

Yep. And the fact that he is our best option as a 10. Means we certainly don’t have one and shouldn’t bother trying that formation.
